Chico Outlaws News Release
FULLERTON, CA - The Chico Outlaws saw a pair of three run leads get away, and Orange County went ahead to stay by scoring five runs in the 7th inning on the way to an 11-9 victory Tuesday in the second of a thee game series at Goodwin Field on the campus of Cal State Fullerton.
Chico began the scoring with three 1st inning runs off Orange County starter Bob Cramer - Steve Boggs led off the game with a double and scored on a base hit by Jose Valdez...Julian Benavidez followed with an RBI double and Valdez came home on a Lino Garcia single. The Flyers stormed back to take the lead in the 2nd when Jeff Van Houten connected for a grand slam off Outlaws starter Jason Roach...Orange County went up 5-3 in the 3rd when Brian Rios led off with a double and scored on a Jeff LaRue base hit. Chico knotted up the game in the 4th on a two-run homer by Eric Pringle...later in the inning Jesse Kovacs doubled and came home on a pair of throwing errors to put the Outlaws back in front 6-5. Chico added single runs in the 5th (Pringle providing an RBI single) and 6th (Valdez bombing a solo homer to right) to make the score 8-5.
The game turned sour for the Outlaws in the 7th - following back-to-back walks, LaRue doubled home Rios to trim Chico's lead to 8-6...then with two outs and the bases loaded, Mark Okano hit a grounder up the middle off Outlaws reliever Rudy Quinonez to plate LaRue and Pat Breen to tie the score. Dave Bacani then singled to drive home Buddy Morales...Jermy Acey followed with a base hit to right to bring home Okano...when the inning finally ended, 10 Flyers had come to the plate and five had scored, giving Orange County a 10-8 lead. In the 8th Breen provided some needed insurance with his 12th homer of the year, a solo shot off Quinonez...but the Outlaws would make it interesting in the 9th. Benavidez led off the inning with a single and would eventually score on an Ezequiel Ruvalcaba wild pitch to make it 11-9...by the time Ruvalcaba left the contest, Chico had loaded the bases with one out. But with the tying run in scoring position, Eric Sheridan came out of the Flyers bullpen to strike out both Boggs and Kovacs to end the game and give Orange County their fifth straight win over the Outlaws this season.
Ruvalcaba (1-1), the third of four Flyers pitchers, got credit for the win, with Sheridan picking up his third save of the season...Quinonez (0-5) was tagged with the loss. Valdez led the Outlaws 13-hit attack by going 3-for-5; Pringle had two hits and three RBI while Boggs and Benavidez each had a pair of hits...Orange County had 14 hits on the night; Van Houten went 3-for-4 while four other Flyers - Bacani, Rios, Breen and LaRue - had two hits. Tuesday's loss dropped Chico to 9-18 on the year, while Orange County improved their record to a Golden Baseball League best 20-6. The Outlaws look to avoid a sweep as they send left-hander Trevor Caughey (2-1) to the mound in Wednesday's series finale...the Flyers will counter with righty Charles Merricks (2-0). Game time is 7:05pm...hear all the action with Rory Miller calling the play-by-play on ESPN Radio 101.7 FM and AM 1340; the game can also be heard on-line at www.ChicoOutlawsBaseball.com
