St. George RoadRunners News Release

ST. GEORGE - The more things change, the more they stay the same. The starting pitcher is always different. The lineup may be tweaked here and there. But one thing is certain, the RoadRunners and the Yuma Scorpions like to light up the scoreboard. On Tuesday night, St. George outpaced the Scorps by a score of 21-12 in front of 1,237, the largest crowd of the year at Bruce Hurst Field.

Claudio Arias and Ryan Stevenson led the offensive charge for St. George. Arias had three hits including his fifth homer of the year and knocked in six. Stevenson had two home runs (9, 10). For a short while, he led the team in home runs. Brandon Taylor would slug his 10th long ball in the fifth to tie Stevenson.

St. George scored multiple runs in every frame except two. Cody Nowlin started the barrage with a two-run single in the first. In the second, Stevenson plated the debuting Seth Loman with a sacrifice. Greg Lemon singled in Dustin Hicks, who had walked and Arias cashed in Lemon and Taylor with a single.

Stevenson's first homer was a three-run bomb off Yuma starter Tyler Pearson in the third. Arias would tag Pearson with a shot that snaked around the foul pole in left in the fourth. After a walk to Wiki Gonzalez, Pearson was pulled for Jack Jensen.

Jensen would allow only two hits in the fifth, but both balls left the yard. Stevenson's second HR was quickly followed by a blast from Taylor. Roger Luque, the Yuma player-pitching coach, entered and slowed down the RoadRunners over the next three.

The RoadRunners eighth sealed the ballgame. Anthony Romero entered from the pen and allowed a double to Loman and a RBI-sacrifice fly to Mike Done. Romero was pulled after walking Stevenson and surrendering a Lemon two-bagger. Henry Calderon, who was the DH for most of the game, took the mound for only the second time in his career. He would allow three unearned runs before recording an out. Taylor reached on an error and Nowlin singled in Stevenson. Arias stepped up and doubled to the gap, plating Lemon and Taylor. Wiki Gonzalez knocked in Arias for the RoadRunners last tally with a single.

Yuma had its share its offense scoring in seven of nine innings. A.J. Valentine capped a four-run Scorpion first with a home run off St. George starter Jason Howerton. Howerton left the game after the first with a sore neck.

Billy Simon tossed the next four innings allowing single tallies in each. Rich Janeway hit a solo-shot in the second. Jeremy Cleveland scored on a ground out by Hector Bernal in the third.

Shannon Sprouse entered in the sixth surrendered two runs. With Janeway at third and Yosvany Almario at first, Maikal Jova grounded a ball to Mike Done at third. Done's throw bounded past Nowlin at first and careened into foul territory allowing both base runners to score.

The Scorpions were kept at bay by John Segovia in the seventh and eighth. Segovia had three strikeouts while scattering a lone hit.

Anthony Pluta pitched the ninth and did serve up a Valentine home run, a two-run bomb to right. Pluta composed himself and retired thereof the next four to nail down the RoadRunners win.

Simon gets the win to improve to 2-4 after going four innings. Pearson (0-2), the former Chico Outlaw, picks up the loss.
