Orange County Flyers News Release
The Orange County Flyers got out-hit but made every hit count as they blasted three homers, including a grand slam, as they swept the Chico Outlaws with a 10-6 victory Wednesday night at Goodwin Field in Fullerton.
Jermy Acey shifted the momentum of the game in favor of the Flyers with 2nd inning Grand Slam that capped off a 6 run inning and the Flyers (21-6) never looked back.
Josh Arhart also had his best night at the plate as a Flyer, going 2-3 with his first homer.
Charles Merricks made his first start of the year, as the Flyers were very busy with transactions in the past week, and performed masterfully last five innings to pick up the win to improve to 3-0 on the year.
Newly acquired Jesse Smith, signed just before the game, closed out the game with a four inning save in his Orange County debut.
Chico starter Trevor Caughey (2-2) pitched masterfully for seven innings allowing just 2 earned runs, but an error in the second lead to a few walks before Acey went deep, and Caughey was saddled with the tough luck loss.
Merricks retired the first two batters of the inning before surrendering three straight singles to Casey Garrison, Jose Valdez, and Julian Benavidez with Benavidez driving in Garrison to give Chico an early lead.
Mark Okano wasted no time tieing the game, sending the second pitch he saw from Chico starter Trevor Caughey over the left field fence to regain the Golden Baseball League home run lead.
The Outlaws were able to start another two out rally in the second as Jesse Kovacs singled after two were out, advancing to second on a balk before scoring when Steve Boggs singled into left field.
In the second, the Flyers were able to get to Caughey without the benefit of a hit, as Buddy Morales reached on an error by the second basemen Kovacs. Caughey then walked Arhart, beaned Van Houten knocking Jeff out of the game, walked Okano to force in one run. But after Caughey walked Bacani to force in another run before Jermy Acey sat on a 2-1 fastball, belting a grand slam off of the center field batter's eye. Patrick Breen added a double as the Flyers pushed across six runs on the back of just two hits.
The Outlaws put up another run in the third when Valdez singled in front of a long Benavidez double off of the right field wall.
Chico scored on the fourth on the back of three consecutive singles as Kovacs got the inning going with one out, Boggs followed suit, and Pringle drove in Kovacs. But Merricks got of the one out jam by forcing Garrison to ground to Jeff LaRue who stepped on third beforethrowing to first to end the threat.
After Charles Merricks blanked the Outlaws in the fifth, Buddy Morales tacked on a run for Orange County, sending a 2-0 pitch from Caughey over the left center field wall.
Merricks turned things over to one of two new Flyers, Jesse Smith who got two outs before an error allowed Ceriani to reach before Boggs drove him in with a single up the middle.
Jose Valdez tripled off of Smith with one out in the seventh before Benavidez brought him with a single into right to draw the Outlaws within two.
But the Flyers would add two more insurance runs in the eighth when Chico reliever Todd Gelatka beaned Fernando Pacheco before Josh Arhart launched his first homer of the season well over the left field wall.
Jesse Smith closed out the ninth with a perfect inning for his first save as a Flyer as Orange County swept Chico and is now 6-0 versus the Outlaws this season.
Orange County heads to Yuma for a three game set with the Scorpions this weekend while Chico makes the trip out to St. George to battle the Roadrunners.
