Vipers Battle to a 4-3 Shootout Win Over the Trashers

Roanoke Valley Vipers News Release

ROANOKE, VA - The Roanoke Valley Vipers, member of the United Hockey League (UHL), fell a goal behind the Trashers on three different occasions, but tallied one of their own within two and a half minutes of each Danbury goal to force a shootout as they went onto win by a final score of 4-3.

Danbury opened up scoring at 17:21 of the second period after a scoreless first with a power play goal from defenseman Regan Kelly. Roanoke quickly retaliated at 19:48 as Josh Tataryn netted a shot off passes from new Viper left wing Mike Wiggins and defenseman Alex Jerofejevs.

The Trashers scored first in the third, getting their second power play goal of the night from Jamie Thompson at the 5:06 mark. A minute and 28 seconds later, Mike Krelove would even the score once again with assists from Gray Shaneberger and Jim Quilty. Danbury would spoil the Vipers effort to maintain a tie once again at the 15:35 mark with a goal from Jean-Michel Daoust. Nineteen seconds later, L.P. Martin would come through for the Vipers to tie the game and force a shootout, scoring off passes from Steve Crusco and Jan Jas.

Vipers goaltender Jamie Hodson allowed only a first-round goal to Daoust, and was spotless in the shootout thereafter. The contrary was true for Trashers netminder Sly Daigle, as he allowed all three of the three Vipers shooters to score, losing his second straight shootout to Roanoke Valley. Crusco, Martin, and Shaneberger scored in order for the Vipers, who with the win took the 2-1 advantage in the current four-game series between the two teams.

The Vipers improved their record to 9-11-4 (22 points) to tie them once again with Richmond for third place in the Eastern Division. The RiverDogs fell to the Rockford IceHogs Saturday by a final score of 5-1, allowing the Vipers to sneak back into a tie for third place. Roanoke will look to take three of four in the series against Danbury with a win Sunday afternoon at 5:05p.m. at the Roanoke Civic Center.
