Dayton Dragons News Release

DAYTON, OH - Former Dayton Dragons pitcher Pedro Viola was promoted to the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday, becoming the 37th former Dragons to reach the major leagues.

Viola spent the first half of the 2007 season in Dayton, pitching in 22 games with the Dragons before being promoted to Sarasota, and later Chattanooga that season. With Dayton, he compiled a 3-1 record with two saves and a 1.87 earned run average while striking out 49 batters in 43.1 innings. He represented the Dragons in the Midwest League All-Star Game.

Viola, who pitched for the Dominican Republic in March's World Baseball Classic, had spent the entire 2009 season with AAA Louisville, where he went 2-2 with a 5.57 ERA and eight saves.

Viola was signed by the Reds as a non-drafted free agent on December 7, 2005.

Other former Dragons who have made their Major League debuts with the Reds this season include outfielder Drew Stubbs, catcher Craig Tatum, and pitchers Robert Manuel and Carlos Fisher. Former Dragon Jeff Stevens made his Major League debut earlier this season with the Chicago Cubs.

The Dragons begin their final home series of regular season tonight at 7:00 PM (EDT) at Fifth Third Field against the South Bend Silver Hawks. Games on Thursday and Friday also begin at 7:00.
