Bees Lower Magic Number To 1 With Victory Over Clinton

Burlington, IA (September 2, 2009) - The Burlington Bees are within one win of the playoffs after defeating Clinton 2-1 Wednesday night at Community Field. Patrick Norris had two hits, a run, an RBI and two stolen bases leading the Bees to the brink of their second consecutive playoff appearance.

Neither team scored a run in the first five innings. Clinton then scored the first run in the top of the sixth. In the bottom of the inning, the Bees tied the game. With two outs Norris singled and then stole second. Adrian Ortiz then came to the plate and hit an infield single. Norris, being aggressive on the bases, came around to score, which tied the game 1-1.

The Bees then took the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning. Ryan Wood led the inning off with a single. Fernando Garcia then came to the plate to put a sacrifice bunt down but beat it at first for a bunt-single. Hilton Richardson then put a bunt down to move both Wood and Garcia up a base. Norris then reached on an RBI Fielder's Choice, which scored Wood and gave the Bees the lead for the first time.

The Bees once again got great pitching. Ivor Hodgson got the start and pitched 5.2 innings allowing just one run on four hits with six strikeouts and two walks. Dusty Odenbach picked up the win out of the bullpen to move to 2-0 this season. Odenbach pitched 2.1 scoreless innings allowing two hits. James Thompson picked up his eighth save pitching a no-hit ninth inning with two strikeouts.

Each team had six hits. Norris was the only Bee with more than one hit going 2-4 with a run and an RBI.

The Bees continue the series on Thursday night at Community Field. With a win, the Bees would clinch a playoff spot for the second consecutive season. Sam Runion is the scheduled starter.
