Springfield Armor News Release
SPRINGFIELD, MA March 16, 2010 - Hosting the Albuquerque Thunderbirds the Springfield Armor won their seventh game this season at 108-104 in front of 2,624 fans at the MassMutual Center in Downtown Springfield in their Irish Heritage Knight. Tonight's game was the first meeting of the season between the two teams.
Early in the game Marcus Campbell scored 5 consecutive points followed by an Albuquerque turnover caused by Justin Hawkins, leaving Campbell with a total of 11 of the Armor's 25 points in the first quarter. Even though the Thunderbirds outscored the Armor finishing the first quarter with 28 points, Springfield shot 100% at the free throw line while Albuquerque shot only 83%.
The Armor took the lead (43-41) on a Campbell slam dunk with 4:32 left in the first half. However, Albuquerque began to pull away late in the second quarter when guard Keith McLeod put up 8 points and forward Trey Gilder added 5. With under a minute to go Albuquerque's 6' 7'' forward Shane Edwards would dunk on a break away and end the half with the Thunderbirds up 58-49.
The Thunderbirds came out strong in the third quarter with a 10-2 run. The Armor started to turn the pace over with a Campbell skyhook followed by a Thunderbird turnover that set up Kyle McAlarney for the long 2 point jumper. McLeod, Edwards, and Marcus Hubbard would team up for 6 consecutive points to increase the Thunderbird's lead to 11 making the score at the end of the third quarter 74-83.
Armor's Hawkins and Abdulai Jalloh started the fourth quarter combining for 11 points to bring Springfield back within two points. Hawkins would continue to dominate the floor scoring 9 points in the last 4 minutes alone.
Jalloh sealed the deal when he grabbed an offensive board with 19 seconds left and shoveled it out to McAlarney who was fouled and sent to the line. After making both free throws, and quickly returning back to the line, McAlarney put up another 2 points which put the Armor ahead by 4 to make the final score 104-108.
The Armor leave for another extended road trip tomorrow and return to the MassMutual Center on March 29th when they take on Fort Wayne in their "Going Green Knight" at 7 p.m. Tickets are still on sale and can be purchased online at www.armorhoops.com or by visiting the MassMutual Center Box Office Monday through Friday, 9-5 and Saturday 10-4.
