Victoria Seals Stunned By The Roadrunners

August 12, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Victoria Seals News Release

The Victoria Seals opened a three game set with the St. George Roadrunners in a Wednesday evening contest at Royal Athletic Park. Victoria sent Isaac Hess (3-2) to the mound, while St. George countered with Chuck Tiffany (0-1).

The Seals opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run in the debut at bat of Victoria's newest addition, Henry Calderon. St. George responded in the second when Chris Nastasi hit an RBI double that bounced off the top of the right centre field fence to tie the game at 1-1.

Taking the early 3-1 lead in the third frame were the Roadrunners, scoring with the bases loaded off of an RBI double from Keenan Long, and an RBI fielder's choice from Matt Huggins.

With relief pitcher Ben Hildreth on the mound for the visitors, Victoria would cut their deficit to just one run on a solo home run from Tim Rodriguez. The Rodriguez shot came after Terrence McClain was caught stealing between first and second base, spoiling what would have been a game-tying blast.

The Roadrunners extended their advantage to 4-2 in the eighth inning, when an error from Seals' shortstop Wilver Perez allowed Huggins to score from third base, after hitting a triple to deep centre field.

Attempting a late rally, Victoria had two men out and runners on first and second in the bottom of the ninth with Perez up to bat against closer Mike Roth. RoadRunners Third basemen Mike Castellano committed the error when the ball went through his legs, allowing Colin Moro to score from second and pull the Seals within one.

Calderon then hit a fielder's choice to load the bases for McClain, but the Seals left fielder hit a Roth offering into foul territory with first baseman Huggins making an over the shoulder catch to give St. George a 4-3 victory.

Chuck Tiffany grabbed his first win of the campaign, allowing one run on three hits with six strikeouts in five innings of work. Isaac Hess registered the loss going seven innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and retiring seven batters. Chris Nastasi powered the Roadrunners offence with two doubles and an RBI in four at bats. Newcomer Henry Calderon went 3-for-5 with an RBI in a losing cause for the Seals.
