Edmonton Capitals News Release
The Edmonton Capitals gave the Chico Outlaws much more of a challenge on Wednesday, but it still wasn't quite enough for the win, as they were out-slugged 11-6.
One night after getting crushed 20-5 in their first game back at TELUS Field after a 10-game road trip, the Caps looked to be on their way to a blowout loss again. The Outlaws scored five runs in the first inning, but the Caps eventually closed the gap to 6-5 before Chico pulled ahead for good.
The Caps are struggling as of late, having won just five of their last 17 games. They are currently in fourth place in the Golden Baseball League's North Division in the second half with a 10-12 record. The Calgary Vipers are red-hot with five straight wins to sit in first in the North at 15-6.
"We're trying to keep it close, but Chico is really hot right now - they're swinging the bat really well," said Edmonton first baseman Cliff Brumbaugh, who went 3-for-5 and drove in three runs in the loss. "We've got to start putting up some zeros in the first couple of innings and start making teams work for their runs. This is a huge homestand, and we've got to keep fighting."
In addition to Brumbaugh's three RBI - the slugger leads the GBL in that category (73) as well as home runs (18) - right fielder Tom Collaro, catcher Josh Tarnow and short stop Enrique Cruz each drove in a run for the Caps. Leading the way for the Outlaws in the victory were catcher Robbie Alcombrack, who drove in a pair of runs, and first baseman Mark Samuelson, who scored three runs.
On the mound, Caps starter Evan White only lasted three innings, giving up six runs on 10 hits to pick up the loss. Reed Dickert got the win for Chico, tossing five innings and giving up five runs on seven hits while striking out six Caps.
Fans were treated to another Wiener Wednesday at the ballpark, as Capital Dogs were on special for just $2. Game three of the four-game series versus Chico will be Thursday at 7 p.m., and it's another 4 for $44 Thursday, as fans can purchase four tickets, four hot dogs and four Pepsi products for $44.
The Capitals are Edmonton's first choice for professional baseball and family entertainment. Season seats start at less than $9 per game and are available pro-rated for the balance of the season. Individual game tickets are available for just $10 every game. Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster locations, the TELUS Field Box Office during regular business hours, by calling (780) 414-GOAL (4625) or online at capsbaseball.ca.
