Santana Sets Record As Toros Edged By A Run Twice Wednesday
August 12, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Tucson Toros News Release
The Tucson Toros lost both games of their Wednesday doubleheader in Calgary, falling to the Vipers 2-1 in the opener and 4-3 in the nightcap.
Despite the loss, 1B Cristobal Santana supplied the shining moment in the first game by singling in his first at bat to takeover lone possession of the longest hitting streak in the Golden Baseball League this season. Santana extended his hitting streak to 21 games dating back to July 10th and surpassing the 20 game mark that he shared with Chico's Ismael Castro. Santana finished the game 1-for-3 with the team's lone RBI. LF Lino Garcia had the only Toro multi-hit game, going 2-for-3. Righty Albie Lopez took the loss but pitched well in going the distance, allowing just 2 runs while fanning a batter per inning in 6 innings of work.
Santana's streak would be halted the second game however, with an 0-for-3 game in the 4-3 loss. The Toros managed just 6 total hits as a team in the game, with Garcia's double as the only for extra-bases. RF Ron Perodin went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. 3B Wally Backman Jr. had a hit and an RBI. The game was tied 3-3 until Calgary pushed the winning run across in the bottom of the 6th off of reliever Cibney Bello, who took his first loss in a Toros uniform this season.
With Santana's incredible stretch the Toros now hold 4 of the 5 longest hitting streaks in the league this season, including Cristobal's 22-gamer and another 18-gamer earlier this year, an 18-game streak by OF Francisco Plasencia and also a 17-gamer by 3B Wally Backman Jr.
The loss was 5th straight for Tucson with 4 of the 5 games being decided by 2 runs or less.
Santana will look to start his next hitting streak and the Toros will attempt to snap their losing streak when the take on the Vipers in Calgary again on Thursday for the fourth game of the five game series. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. Tucson time.
