Orange County Flyers News Release
YUMA, Ariz. (August 12, 2010) - The Orange County Flyers sacrificed the Rams of Tijuana, 29-2, in the biggest win in franchise history on Thursday afternoon. The Flyers tied or broke 11 team and individual records, most notably runs scored in a game, highlighted by a new record 11-run inning in the top of the third. Centerfielder Steve Boggs led the way with a club record-tying seven RBI, going 4-for-6 with a record-tying three doubles and four runs scored.
Starting pitcher Manny Ayala needed only 64 pitches to get through six scoreless innings for his GBL-leading 10th win of the season, becoming the first OC pitcher to reach double-digit wins without a loss. He is now two wins away of matching the league record of 12 wins in a season, which he set as a rookie in 2005 with the Mesa Miners.
Outfielder David Harris and catcher Jim Goethals each scored five runs, becoming only the third and fourth players to cross the plate that many times in a single game in franchise history.
The Flyers (37-28, 15-5 second half) were aided by a club-record 16 walks in the blowout against Tijuana (9-58, 3-19). Orange County has now outscored the Cimarrones 88-9 in six games between the two clubs this season.
Jimmy Rohan and Sergio Pedroza each added homeruns, and Tyler Keeble drove in four RBI. Ayala aided his own cause going 3-for-4 with two RBI, two walks, and two runs scored before being lifted for relievers Robert Enriquez and Bryan Harris.
Harris tossed a perfect eighth and ninth inning of relief for Orange County in the blowout.
The St. George RoadRunners set the GBL record for runs in a game when they defeated the Yuma Scorpions 30-16 in a 2008 game featuring 10 St. George homeruns.
The series against Tijuana in Yuma wraps up on Thursday with a doubleheader beginning at 11am Pacific. The games can be heard live online through www.OrangeCountyFlyers.com.
