Victoria Seals Derail The Flyers

Victoria Seals News Release

The Victoria Seals squared off against the undefeated Orange County Flyers to open a four-game series on Thursday night at Royal Athletic Park. Taking on the Flyers for the first time in 2010, Victoria sent former Major Leaguer Jason Kershner (1-0) to the hill while the visitors countered with 2009 GBL Pitcher of the Year Matt Durkin (0-0).

The Seals jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first frame, turning a lead-off single from Sean Smith into a 3-0 lead after an RBI groundout from Colin Moro and a two-run blast off the bat of Terrence McClain - his third home run of the season. Stretching their lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the third, a one-out walk to McClain came around to score on an RBI single from Chris Van Rossum.

Answering right back to even the game in the fourth, Orange County used all nine batters and the help of singles from David Harris, Tyler Keeble, Steve Boggs and Jimmy Rohan to tie the game 4-4. The Flyers then grabbed their first lead of the contest in the top of the seventh inning, converting a lead-off walk to Keeble with a sacrifice fly courtesy of Kylee Hash.

Turning the table once more in the bottom of the seventh frame, Victoria snagged their second lead of the contest when three unforced errors from the Flyers, along with an RBI double off the bat of Brian Rios, plated three Victoria runners for a 7-5 Seals advantage. After adding an insurance run in the eighth inning to lead by three, Victoria turned to closer Brandon Villafuerte in the top of the ninth. Surrendering one run after an error by second basemen Wilver Perez, the right-hander was able to reel in a late Orange County rally and pick up his third save of the season to cap off an 8-6 Victoria win.

Reliever Andrew Arreola picked up his second win of the year for the Seals, while set-up man Bryan Harris gave up his first blemish of the campaign in a losing effort. Terrence McClain finished with a pair of hits and two RBI's for the Seals, while a 4-for-6 night was not enough for Jimmy Rohan and the Flyers.

The Seals are back in action with game two of the four-game set against the Orange County Flyers tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. at Royal Athletic Park. The contest will also be broadcast live online at www.victoriaseals.ca, and in the ballpark on 88.1 FM. Both single game and season tickets for the 2010 campaign are now on sale, available through the Victoria Seals office. Call (250) 220-7777 for more information, or to book your seat today!
