vs Alaska Aces

game two of a three-game series

LAST GAME : Victoria hosted the division leading Alaska Aces in game one of a three-game series that waves goodbye to 2006 and welcomes 2007 at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre.

Just 26 seconds into the contest, Mike Stutzel lit the lamp and gave Victoria the 1-0 edge. At 4:31 into the first, Wes Goldie notched his 15th goal of the season, and his fourth shorthanded goal of the season, and gave the Salmon Kings a 2-0 lead.

Alaska scored the next two goals to tie the game 2-2. Florian Iberer scored his first goal of the season and Olivier Filion tallied a powerplay goal in the second period.

Before the close of the second, with 1:15 remaining, Goldie lifted a rebound past Goaltender Derek Gustasfon for the 3-2 advantage. Salmon Kings netminder Julien Ellis made 15 saves in the final period to keep the Aces off the board.

Mark Morrison, in his head coaching debut, led the Salmon Kings to snap their six-game winless streak.

ACE UP THE SLEEVE : two sharp shooting Salmon Kings have been causing the Alaska squad some grief this season....Kiel McLeod scored the opening goals of the first series this season up in Alaska on Oct 20 and 21...Wes Goldie earned the game-winner last night to snap the Aces seven-game unbeaten streak in regulation.....McLeod has posted a total five goals versus Alaska this season....Goldie has produced six points in the last two games against Alaska....Goldie ranks second in the ECHL with four shorthanded goals.

YOUNG BLOOD BLUELINE : The Salmon Kings defensive squad and two netminders encapsulate five of the six rookies on the team...Justin Spencer, newest addition to the Salmon Kings defensive squad, is the third rookie on the blueline...Matt Kelly has earned four points (1 g, 3 a) and a +1 rating in the last nine games.... Seamus Young leads Victoria D-men in goals (5), tied for second in ECHL with rookie defenseman, and has three multi-point games.

CONGRATULATIONS TO JULIEN ELLIS (G), who was selected to the 2007 All-Star team

**The Salmon Kings have dedicated the remainder of the season to former Victoria Times Colonist sports editor Gavin Fletcher, who was killed in a single vehicle accident on December 11. The players are bearing his initials on a patch on their jerseys.
