Vic Davilla Joins Jackals

Little Falls, NJ - On Friday afternoon, the New Jersey Jackals announced the signing of Can-Am League veteran Vic Davilla.

A 15-year veteran of professional baseball, Davilla is well known to Jackals fans. A 26th round draft pick by the Toronto Blue Jays in 1993, Davilla begin his independent league career in 1997 with the Adirondack Lumberjacks in the Northeast League - the predecessor to the Can-Am League. In 1998, Davilla was acquired by the Albany-Colonie Diamond Dogs where he established himself as one of the league's premier hitters.

After hitting 43 home runs for Albany-Colonie in three seasons from 2000-2002, Davilla joined the Allentown Ambassadors for the 2003 season. Playing under current Jackals coach Ed Ott in Allentown, the New York City native posted a .338 batting average with 20 home runs and a league-leading 74 RBIs.

In 2004, Davilla joined the expansion North Shore Spirit where he continued to build his impressive resume. Last season, Davilla took over the helm of the Spirit, serving as the team's manager. Davilla was also active as a player in 20 games in 2007, batting .329 with five home runs and 22 RBIs as he lead North Shore to the Can-Am League championship series where the Spirit fell to the league-champion Nashua Pride.

In his illustrious career, the Georgetown, MA resident has compiled a .301 batting average with 150 home runs. Davilla was selected as the Can-Am League's All-Star first baseman in both 2005 and 2006.

Davilla was in uniform for his Jackals debut on Friday night on the road against the Brockton Rox, going 0-5 while starting in left field and batting sixth.

To make room on the roster for Davilla, the Jackals released veteran outfielder Ramon Nivar. Nivar, a former major leaguer with the Texas Rangers and Baltimore Orioles, was batting .221 with three home runs and 21 RBIs in 2008.

The team also signed infielder Tommy Murphy. Murphy, an infielder who will also see time on the mound, is a 2008 graduate of Division-II Caldwell College. Murphy made the ECAC All-Star team as a utility player after earning ABCA/Rawlings all-Northeast Region second team and all-CACC first team honors this spring. He led the Cougars in batting with a .394 average while recording nine doubles, 31 runs, three homers and 18 RBIs despite missing 11 games due to injury. For his career, the two-time all-CACC first team honoree recorded 139 hits in 396 at-bats for a career batting average of .351. He also went 13-7 on the mound with a 4.52 earned-run average in 151 1/3 innings pitched in his career.
