Worcester Tornadoes News Release

Atlantic City, NJ -- Chris Colabello tied his own Can-Am League record with three home runs and knocked in half his team's runs, as the Worcester Tornadoes erupted for a franchise-record nine-run 5th inning in a 16-6 drubbing of the Atlantic City Surf on Saturday night.

Colabello, who was denied what should have been a two-run homer on Friday night due to a bad call, appeared to have a chip on his shoulder tonight. He ripped a three-run shot to left in the 2nd inning, capped a 12-batter, nine-run 5th inning with another three-run blast to left-center, then put the icing on the cake with a two-run homer to left-center in the 9th inning. Omar Pena added a three-run double and 4 RBIs on the night, as the Tornadoes moved to a season-high nine games over .500 at 18-9.

The Surf struck first, using a Billy Kovatch sacrifice fly in the 2nd inning to go ahead 1-0. But Worcester came right back in the top of the 3rd inning, as Colabello launched his first home run of the night off righty Rory Shortell (0-1) and Chuck Jeroloman added an RBI single as Worcester went on top, 4-1. However, the Surf tied it with three runs off Shaun McNamara (2-2) in the bottom of the 3rd inning, and then went ahead 5-4 in the 4th inning, using a Jeroloman error to score an unearned run off McNamara. But Worcester would put things out of reach in the 5th inning, as they sent a season-high 12 men to the plate and scored a franchise record 9 runs in the inning on 6 hits, a costly error, a walk and a hit batter. The big blows of the inning were Pena's bases-clearing three-run double and Colabello's second three run homer of the night, off righty Jim Wladyka. Both teams tacked on unearned run in the 8th and Colabello put the final nail in the Surf's coffin in the 9th with a two-run longball off reliever Derek Barrows.

McNamara (2-2) went 6 innings for the Win and Shortell (0-1) was charged with 8 Runs (6 earned) in 4.1 innings and took the Loss. Colabello tied his own Can-Am League record for home runs in a game, which he set at Hanover Insurance Park on 5/29/07 in a game in which he also set new league records for RBIs (12) and Total Bases (13) in a single contest. Rookie righthander Chandler Barnard made a successful pro debut, allowing just one hit and an unearned run in two strong innings out of the bullpen. The Tornadoes will go for the sweep of the Surf in Atlantic City when they play the series finale on Sunday night. Lefty Tom Cochran will make the start for Worcester, and he will be opposed by Atlantic City lefty Brian Rodaway. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
