Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BURLINGTON, VT ---Kyle Morrison and Evan Bronson combined on a two-hit shutout, while Destin Hood and Sean Nicol hit solo home runs as the Vermont Lake Monsters beat the Jamestown Jammers 5-0 in New York-Penn League action Thursday night at historic Centennial Field.
A night after Jamestown pounded out 21 hits in a 13-0 shutout win over the Lake Monsters, Morrison and Bronson combined to allow just two hits with two hit batters, no walks and 10 strikeouts. Morrison (2-2) retired the first 11 Jammers that he faced on, allowing a two-out in the fourth inning and striking out four in his six shutout innings.
Bronson gave up a leadoff bloop double in the eighth and hit a batter with one out in the ninth, while striking out six of the nine outs he recorded in his three scoreless innings for his third save of the season. The shutout was the sixth of the season for Lake Monster pitchers.
Vermont scored twice in the bottom of the first inning to take a quick 2-0 lead. Francisco Soriano led off with a single, stole second and scored on a J.P. Ramirez RBI double. Hood followed with an RBI single up the middle to score Ramirez with the second run of the inning, then Hood led off the third with his second home run of the season for the Lake Monsters.
Vemront added two more runs in the sixth as Ronnie LaBrie doubled and scored on a Soriano RBI single. After Soriano was caught stealing, Nicol smacked his first home run of the season to give the Lake Monsters a 5-0 lead. The home runs for Hood and Nicol mark the first time this season that the Lake Monsters had two home runs in one game.
Soriano went 3-for-4 as the Lake Monsters had 11 hits on the night, their first double-digit hit game since August 9th. Nicol, Hood and J.R. Higley each added two hits for the Lake Monsters, while Kyle Jensen had Jamestown's fourth-inning single and Carlos Paulino had the Jammers leadoff double in the eighth. Starter Curtis Petersen (2-4) allowed three ruuns on five hits in three-plus innings to take the loss for Jamestown (23-36).
The Lake Monsters and Jammers will wrap up the three-game series at Centennial Field on Friday night beginning at 7:05 pm. Vermont (27-31) then head out on a five-day, six-game roadtrip before returning home for their final homestand of the season starting on August 27th.
