State College Spikes News Release

STATE COLLEGE, PA-The State College Spikes made a valiant attempt at a four-run comeback in the ninth inning, but fell just short in a 4-3 defeat against the Brooklyn Cyclones on Thursday at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

2009 New York-Penn League All-Star Brock Holt went 3-for-4 with a ninth-inning RBI that drew State College (28-29) within one run to lead the Spikes' offensive charge. Pat Irvine continued his hot streak as well, going 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI in the ninth. Irvine has now hit .450 over his last six games with seven total runs batted in.

Justin Byler led off the ninth with a double and scored the Spikes' first run. Butch Biela also contributed an RBI single for State College in the late rally in front of 3,833 fans at the ballpark.

The Spikes had been shut out on four hits entering the final inning, thanks to a strong start by Brooklyn (38-21) right-hander Collin McHugh (7-2), who struck out seven and walked one. McHugh tied teammate Mark Cohoon and State College's Tyler Cox for the league lead in wins with his seventh of the year.

Jason Erickson (2-2) took the loss for State College, allowing three unearned runs on four hits and a walk while striking out four.

Friday night, the Spikes finish off their three-game set against the Cyclones with a 7:05 p.m. contest at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. State College will send right-hander Kyle McPherson (2-3) to the mound to face Brooklyn left-hander and 2009 NYPL All-Star Jim Fuller (3-5).

Fans can have a blast on 4 for $44 Friday, and purchase four Diamond Club seats, four hot dogs and four small sodas for just $44. A spectacular fireworks display will light up the night skies after the game, presented by the Old State Clothing Company, and young Scouts will be able to stay the night in the ballpark outfield during the Scout Night Sleepover. Kids will also be able to run the bases after the game.

College students and their parents can get great value as well, with parents getting a ticket discount on Kiss Your College Kid Goodbye at the Ballpark Night, and students from all of the colleges and universities of central Pennsylvania being able to take advantage of the 3-2-1 Special to receive $3 off their ticket (except Diamond Club seats), plus drink $2 sodas and eat $1 hot dogs all night long.
