Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
FISHKILL, N.Y. (August 20, 2009) -- The Hudson Valley Renegades (27-32) drop a second game by the score of 6-3 to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (38-21) despite 10 strikeouts from Renegades starting pitcher Kyle Lobstein.
Lobstein (2-4, 3.15) struck out a career-high 10 batters in five innings of work, striking out the side in both the first and fifth innings. Lobstein did not allow a hit until the fourth inning, but surrendered three in that frame which led to three runs.
In the bottom of the second inning Brett Nommensen (.235-1-19) ripped a pitch down the first base line and into the right field corner for a leadoff triple. Elias Otero followed with a 1-0 base hit through the right side of the infield to drive in Nommensen for the first run of the game. Otero would later score on a groundball to shortstop Rafael Vera that was dropped by Scrappers first baseman Juan Aponte with two outs.
The Renegades scored their third run on a two-base hit to center by Mark Thomas (.265-4-19) that scored Chris Murrill (.281-0-14) from second base and gave Hudson Valley a 3-0 lead.
Lobstein surrendered his first hit of the game in the fourth which opened the floodgates for three Scrapper runs. Chun Chen crushed an RBI double over the head of centerfielder Murrill with two runners on and drove in Greg Folgia for Mahoning Valley's first run of the game. Ben Carlson continued the rally with an RBI single and Rafael Vera drove in the tying run with a sacrifice fly to right.
Mahoning Valley took the lead in the top of the seventh on Casey Frawley's infield hit to third baseman Tyler Bortnick that drove in Juan Aponte with two outs. Bortnick made a diving play along the line to save a double, but had to rush the throw and pulled first baseman David Genao off the bag allowing Frawley to reach safely.
The Scrappers added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth. Vera scored when Murrill overthrew third base on a single by Juan Aponte. Aponte would later score on a deep RBI double to centerfield by Jason Kipnis.
The Renegades look to salvage the series against Mahoning Valley at 7:05 p.m. on Friday. Hudson Valley's starter righty Alexander Colome (5-2, 1.95) will face right-handed Clayton Cook (4-2, 2.06) in a battle of aces.
