Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

LOWELL, MA --- Matt Murton's solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning snapped a 2-2 tie and the Lowell Spinners added a couple of insurance runs in the seventh inning to defeat the Vermont Expos 5-2 in New York-Penn League action Saturday evening at LeLacheur Park.

The Expos had trailed 2-0 when they scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Lorvin Louisa led off the inning with a solo home run to leftfield. It was Louisa's team-leading third home run of the season and team-high 13th RBI.

Henry Encarnacion followed Louisa's homer with a single, then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and flyout to center. Larry Wayne York then tied the game with a single to left to score Encarnacion. Vermont finished the inning with three hits, but the Expos had just three hits in their other eight innings at bat.

Lowell had taken a 2-0 lead with unearned runs in the first and second innings off starter Jeremy Plexico, who did work out of a bases loaded, one-out jam in the first inning with a strikeout and forceout.

Plexico had allowed just the three runs (one earned) on four hits over the first six innings before being touched for two runs on two hits in the seventh. After a leadoff walk, sac bunt and single put runners on the corners, Murton hit a sacrifice fly to right scoring Robert Evans for a 4-2 lead. Jeremy West followed with a two-out RBI double for a three-run lead and the end of the night for Plexico (2-3), who struckout eight over 6.2 innings.

Each team finished the game with six hits, including a 2-for-3 night for York. Franklyn Jimenez went 0-for-4 for Vermont to snap his 10-game hitting streak. Louisa now has the Expos longest current hitting streak at six games (7-for-21).

Jonathan Papelbon allowed two hits over the first three innings for the Spinners, while reliever Jarrett Gardner (3-1) picked up the win with two runs on four hits allowed over four innings.

The Expos (7-32) have now lost six games in a row and have also lost five straight games on the road, where they are now 1-18 for the season. Vermont is also 0-24 when the opponent scored five or more runs, 0-23 when the opponent scores first and 1-5 against the Spinners in 2003.

Vermont and Lowell (20-19) will play game two of the three-game series on Sunday evening with Dan Generelli getting his second start for the Expos after five relief appearances.
