
Ventura's Walk-Off Single Send WhiteWings Past Thunder in 10

HARLINGEN - Leivi Ventura hit a walk-off double in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings a 12-11 victory over the Coastal Bend Thunder on Saturday at Harlingen Field.
The WhiteWings (41-42) maintain their one-game lead over the San Angelo Colts for the fourth and final playoff spot while lower their magic number to clinch to eight.
Yeurys Tejeda led off the bottom of the 10th with a single against Frank James Jr. (4-7) before scoring on Ventura's double into the leftfield corner.
That made a winner of Mickey Cassidy (2-0), who struck out two in a scoreless top of the 10th.
The WhiteWings got on the board against Toro Trevino right away. Javis Diaz drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the first and moved to third on an infield-single by Luany Sanchez. Tejeda followed with a sacrifice fly. Leivi Ventura got hit by the next pitch. A wild pitch scored Sanchez an moved Ventura to second. Another wild pitch moved Ventura to third, from where he scored on a triple by Welington Dotel to make it 3-0.
The Thunder (28-55) responded in the top of the third by batting around against Andres Rosales. Lammar Guy led off with a single and stole second. After Ron Fenwick singled to move Guy to third, Mike Goss reached on an RBI-fielder's choice. Gianican Rosa followed with his fifth home run of the season. Kevin Griffin reached on an error and scored two batters later on a single by Carl Johnson to give the Thunder a 4-3 lead.
In the bottom of the third, Ventura hit his 21st home run with one out. Welinson Baez followed with a walk, Dotel singled and Arlon Qurioz hit an RBI-single. Eric Gonzalez hit a sacrifice fly to give the WhiteWings a 6-3 lead.
In the top of the fourth, Guy and Fenwick drew leadoff walks before Goss hit an RBI-single to knock out Rosales. Miguel Matos came in and allowed a two-run single to Rosa to give the Thunder a 7-6 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, Sanchez drew a one-out four-pitch walk, Tejeda singled, Ventura hit an RBI-single and Baez grounded into a fielder's choice, on which Tejeda scored when the relay throw to first went wide, to give the WhiteWings an 8-7 lead.
Fenwick led off the top of the sixth with a single. After a sacrifice bunt, Rosa hit an RBI-double, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI-single by Griffin to give the Thunder a 9-8 lead and knock out Matos.
In the bottom of the sixth, Sanchez hit a one-out single and Ventura was hit by a pitch with two outs to set-up an RBI-single by Baez to knock out Trevino with the scored tied at 9-9.
Dustin Smith struck out to start the top of the seventh against Ruben De La Rosa, but reached on a wild pitch. Guy walked to move Smith to second. Two out later, Rosa hit a two-run double to make it 11-9.
Gonzalez drew a one-out four-pitch walk against Alex Fernandez in the bottom of the seventh. Roberto Rodriguez followed with an RBI-double to score pinch-runner Domenic Di Ricco as the WhiteWings climbed within 11-10.
Tejeda led off the bottom of the eighth with his 14th home run to tie the game at 11-11.
The WhiteWings and Thunder play for the final time this season on Sunday at 7:05 p.m. Gates open at 6:05. Right-hander Jhonny Montoya (0-2) is expected to face left-hander Luis Martinez (1-1).
