Early runs doom Dillas 10-8 against Colts

AMARILLO, TX - The Amarillo Dillas fell behind the San Angelo Colts in the first inning Saturday night and could never get the comeback going as the Dillas fell to the Colts 10-8 in front of 1,953 fans at the Amarillo National Dilla Villa.
Dillas starter Turner Brasher (2-1) got the loss, allowing nine hits and seven runs in five plus innings. Colts starter Brian Herschel (6-8) got the win, going two outs short of nine innings, allowing all eight Dillas runs in the effort. San Angelo closer Chase Vacek got his third save, retiring the two batters he needed in the ninth.
The Colts got on the board early as Ronnie Gaines led off the game with a single and scored on a Jason Landreth RBI double. Jason Crosland and Alex Fernandez each followed with doubles to score two more runs for a 3-0 Colts advantage.
Amarillo responded with a first inning run of their own as Joaquin Rodriguez doubled and scored on a Carlos Figueroa double. They scored again in the second as Rob Recuenco hit a fielder's choice, went to second on a Brian Bueno hit-by-pitch and scored on a Jermel Lomack RBI single for a 3-2 score.
San Angelo extended their lead in the third as Fernandez doubled and scored on a Landon Camp two-run homerun for a 5-2 Colts lead. The Dillas responded in the fourth as Recuenco walked, went to third on a Bueno single and scored on a Lomack sacrifice fly for a 5-3 deficit.
The Colts added more in the sixth as Blake Shaffer walked and went to third on a Stephen Yoo single. Gaines grounded out to score Shaffer while Yoo scored on a Butch Ballez RBI single for a 7-3 San Angelo advantage. The Dillas got within a run in the sixth as Recuenco scored on wild pitch while Julio Martinez hit a bases loaded single to pull the deficit to 7-6.
San Angelo added two runs in the seventh off four-straight singles and added another in the ninth on a Yoo RBI single for a four-run lead.
In the ninth, the Dillas loaded the bases and pinch hitter Andrew Wong singled to score Martinez and Stephen Douglas, but Alberto Cruz was thrown out at third on the play to end the game with the Dillas falling 10-8.
With the loss, the Dillas fall to 48-35 while the Colts improve to 40-43. Sunday, Amarillo will take on San Angelo for the final game of a four-game set at 6:05pm with the Aqua One Pre-Game Show set to begin at 5:50pm on AudioSportsOnline via www.myamarillodillas.com. Game time is tentative and is subject to blackout.
