Velasquez Gem Stifles Corvallis Knights

CORVALLIS, OR - Gavin Velasquez dealt his second straight complete game and the Yakima Valley Pippins offense delivered key insurance runs late for an impressive 7-0 win over the Corvallis Knights on Friday night at Goss Stadium.

The Cal State Fullerton product was impressive from the first pitch giving up just four hits, earning his 4th win of the season. After allowing a base hit in the 2nd inning, Velasquez retired 19 straight batters until a base hit in the 8th inning, striking our four while walking just one.

Leading 1-0 entering the 6th inning, Michael Filia (UC Irvine) provided the crucial insurance runs, clearing the bases with a 2-out RBI triple into the left field corner.

The Yakima Valley Pippins (18-13, 3-1) would add two more runs in the 8th inning as Branson Trube (Gonzaga) led off the frame with a base hit, scoring on an RBI single from Jay Schuyler(San Diego), endeding the night with his 10th multi-hit game of the season.

Seven players posted hits in the winning effort, including an RBI double from Mitchell Morimoto(Arizona) extending the lead, 7-0, during the 8th inning. Freddy Smith (Cal State Northridge) led off the frame with a double, adding an RBI groundout in the 2nd inning for the initial 1-0 lead.

Christian Koss (UC Irvine) posted one of the two triples on the night for Yakima Valley, who scored seven or more runs for the 8th time this season. Yakima native Jens Jensen (Central Washington) will start on Saturday night with first pitch set for 6:40 p.m. Fans can listen to the action live on 1460 ESPN Yakima, the official home for Yakima Valley Pippins Baseball.
