
Late Rally Falls Short in Corvallis

CORVALLIS, OR - The Yakima Valley Pippins rallied for three runs in the 7th inning, falling short of the Corvallis Knights, 5-3, on Saturday night at Goss Stadium.
Trailing 4-0 entering the top of the 7th, the Pippins strung together five hits and Ryan Garcia (UCLA) was tagged out on a close play at the plate to end the threat. Hunter Hanson (College of Idaho) began the scoring flurry with an RBI double, plating Mitchell Morimoto (Arizona).
The Pippins would then cut the lead in half, 4-2, on an RBI single from Christian Koss (UC Irvine), who later scored on a 2-out RBI single from Ryan Garcia. Yakima Valley (18-14, 3-2) would get no closer, however, as the Corvallis Knights (19-10, 1-1) would add an insurance runs in the 8th inning and Chase Kaplan closed out the final two frames.
Yakima native Jens Jensen (Central Washington) earned the loss pitching six innings allowing four runs, three earned, including an early 1-0 deficit back in the 2nd inning. Matt Fish (Lewis-Clark State College) allowed one run in relief over one-plus inning of work, walking the leadoff batter in the 8th, ending his scoreless streak at 6.2 innings. Tanner Simpson (Lewis-Clark State College) allowed that inherited run to score, closing things out with one hit and strikeout.
Jace VanDeBrake (Gonzaga) set the table working out three walks hitting out of the leadoff spot. Freddy Smith (Cal State Northridge) added a base hit in the 3-run 7th inning while Mitchell Morimoto posted his team-high 11th stolen base of the season.
Both teams return to action for the rubber match on Sunday night starting at 5:05 p.m. as Zach Draper (College of Idaho) will start for the Pippins. Fans can listen to all the action live on 1460 ESPN Yakima, the official home for Yakima Valley Pippins Baseball.
