Lincoln Stars News Release
Three different skaters recorded three-point nights as the Lincoln Stars defeated the Omaha Lancers, 5-1, on Friday night at the Ice Box.
Klavs Veinbergs (2+1), Jared Mangan (0+3) and Jack Larrigan (0+3) all shined in Lincoln's (27-18-3) fifth win in the sixth game of the season series vs. Omaha (13-26-5-2). Lincoln has now won the last three games of the season series and never trailed Friday night.
Veinbergs opened the scoring and then chased Lancers' netminder Michael Hrabal with this second goal. His first snuck in far-post side with 1:29 to go in the first and his second at the 4:02 mark of the second period on back-hander through the legs of Hrabal marked his second multi-goal game of the season, both of which have come against Omaha. The other was on Nov. 11 at the Liberty First Credit Union Arena, also a two goal and one assist performance.
"Klavs is trending in the right direction," head coach Rocky Russo said. "The Euro's sometimes have a hard time adjusting and then once he started to adjust he was gone for so long for World Juniors. He's had some injuries this year and he's really trending in the right direction. He's playing hard, he's competing, he's winning his battles, he's playing with some confidence now. He was around the net and we tell guys all the time that if you want to score goals, you've got to go where the goals are."
In between both Veinbergs' goals Tanner Ludtke scored the game-winner with his 26th of the season. Ludtke tried to pass back-and-forth with Mason Marcellus but his pass attempt back to Marcellus hit a defenseman's stick on the way and redirected top shelf to double Lincoln's lead 1:21 before Veinbergs scored his second of the game.
Each of the Stars' final two goals were successful give-and-go's as Mangan and Boston Buckberger both cashed in on the right side. Mangan entered the zone, passed the puck to his left to Larrigan and perfectly tee'd Mangan up for a one-timer to make it 4-0, Stars, at the 4:21 mark of the third.
Riley Rosenthal broke the shutout bid less than a minute later but a major boarding penalty put the Stars on a five-minute power play with 9:08 left in the game. Marcellus picked up his second assist of the night by setting up Buckberger with another one-timer for his second power-play goal of the season at the 13:35 mark of the third.
Lucas Massie turned aside 19-of-20 shots to earn his second win of the season against Omaha and his ninth overall. He made two huge breakaway stops a minute apart early in the third period.
Lincoln remains two points ahead of Tri-City for third place in the Western Conference. The Stars look to win their fifth straight head-to-head matchup against the Lancers at 6:05 p.m. on Saturday night, this time on the road.
