Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
The Waterloo Black Hawks rang the post multiple times, and Sam Scopa made 35 saves in a 1-0 Cedar Rapids RoughRiders win at Young Arena.
It was the first shutout for the Cedar Rapids rookie, and it came on a night when his team yielded an uncharacteristic number of scoring chances. The RoughRiders had allowed 30 or more shots on just one other occasion since the beginning January. Meanwhile, the Black Hawks were last blanked on March 5, 2022 in a 2-0 decision against the Des Moines Buccaneers.
Both teams had a pair of power play opportunities in the first period, but neither could convert. The second period started four-on-four, and the RoughRiders seized the lead at the 26-second mark. Bryce Montgomery carried the puck into the offensive zone and clicked on a feed to Ryan Walsh. Cedar Rapids' leading scorer cut from left to right across the top of the crease and slipped in a low chance.
Emmett Croteau stopped the other 28 Cedar Rapids shots and kept the Hawks within striking distance the entire night.
Waterloo had a 35-29 edge in shots. Both teams went 0-for-4 on the power play.
Now the Black Hawks go on the road for a pivotal three-game series in Fargo, meeting the Force next Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
