Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
Waldorf, MD - Despite a tremendous complete-game performance from Virgil Vasquez, the Blue Crabs still couldn't end their losing ways as they fell 2-0 to the Camden Riversharks at Regency Furniture Stadium on Thursday night.
The lone Camden runs came on a wild pitch from Vasquez that scored centerfielder Jonel Pacheco from third in the first inning, while a solo homer by shortstop Danny Richar (10) made the score 2-0 in the fourth. It was Richar's second homer in as many nights.
The Blue Crabs best chances to score came in the first and ninth innings. With centerfielder Adam Godwin at first and two out in the first, third baseman Travis Garcia doubled down the leftfield line. Godwin tried to score, but a beautiful relay to the plate by Camden but Godwin down to end the inning. In the ninth, Southern Maryland loaded the bases with two out before right fielder Ben Harrison grounded into a fielder's choice to end the game.
In between the two failed rallies Southern Maryland was stymied by Camden starter J.R. Mathes who went 8-plus innings while allowing six hits and walking none to get the win and move to 3-4 on the season. After getting into trouble in the ninth, the ball was handed over to Camden closer Jay Marshall who got through the inning for his third save of the season and his second of the series.
As for Vasquez, he gave the Blue Crabs their second complete-game in the past five days as he allowed only six hits, while walking none and striking out a season-high eight batters. The loss dropped him to 6-6 as the Blue Crabs fell below .500 for the first time this season to 41-42 overall.
Each team had only six hits in the game with Richar leading the way for Camden with a 2-4 performance. Southern Maryland got two hits apiece from Garcia and catcher Christian Lopez.
Southern Maryland will square off with Camden in the finale of their three-game series on Friday with first-pitch slated for 7:05. The Blue Crabs will send righty Brian Slocum (3-4, 4.06 ERA) to the hill against fellow-righty Federico Baez (6-4, 5.24 ERA) for the Riversharks. The game can be heard on www.somdbluecrabs.com.
