Rochester Red Wings News Release
CHARLOTTE, NC - Kennys Vargas became the first Red Wing to homer in four straight games since 1990 as Rochester bested the Charlotte Knights 7-6 in 10 innings Wednesday night at BB&T Ballpark.
The last Wing to accomplish the feat was Sam Dorn in 1990. Vargas extended his streak with a two-run blast in the first inning to give the Red Wings (22-18) a 2-0 lead. The first baseman has also driven in a run in seven straight games, the longest by a Wing since Chris Colabello collected an RBI in eight straight games in 2013.
The Knights (21-20) got a run back in the bottom of the first inning against Rochester starter David Martinez on a Matt Davidson sacrifice fly.
Buck Britton gave the Red Wings a two-run advantage once again with a solo homer in the fourth. Charlotte wasted listed little time getting the run back and then some in the bottom half as Travis Ishikawa took Martinez deep for a two-run blast to tie the game.
Vargas and Britton drove in runs in the sixth and James Beresford hit an RBI double in the seventh to give the Wings a three-run cushion. The Knights would then score a run in three straight innings, the last of which to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Max Kepler and Vargas singled to open the 10th and Kepler later scored the decisive run on a Tommy Field ground out, one of three runs scored in the game for the German-born outfielder.
Ryan O'Rourke (1-0) earned the victory with 1.1 scoreless innings, though the runner he inherited in the ninth scored to tie the game. Marcus Walden retired the only two batters he faced in the 10th inning to earn his third save.
Rochester won two of the three games in the series with Charlotte have the Wings have now won nine of their last 11 games.
