Reno Silver Sox News Release

Reno, NV- The Reno Silver Sox, proud members of the Golden Baseball League, announced today that 3B Edgar Varela has had his contract purchased by the Florida Marlins organization and will report to the Marlins' Florida State League affiliate, the Jupiter Hammerheads.

In Varela's half season in Reno, the Long Beach State product tore up Golden League pitching hitting .348 (3rd in the league) with 9 home runs (t-3rd in the league) and 43 RBI (3rd in the league). His 62 hits, 19 doubles, and 28 extra-base hits all led the league. Varela was voted the starting third baseman for the North Team in the 2006 GBL All-Star Game.

"We're losing one of the top players in the Golden Baseball League," said Reno Silver Sox team Manager Les Lancaster. "A player of Edgar's caliber will be hard to replace both offensively and defensively."

Originally a 31-round pick to the Chicago White Sox in 2002, Varela came to the Silver Sox this off-season after being released from the Diamondbacks organization. Last year in Single-A Lancaster, Varela hit .309 with 9 home runs and 60 RBI before his surprising release.

Varela is expected to join the Hammerheads today and by going to the Florida State League, joins former Silver Sox teammate Victor Hall who is currently with the Tampa Yankees after having his contract purchased earlier this year. Replacing Varela on the All-Star team will be Silver Sox INF Mike Done. Done is batting .298 with a home run and 21 runs knocked in.

In a separate move this weekend, the Silver Sox announced they have traded RHP Hideki Nagasaka to the Chico Outlaws for a player to be named later. Nagasaka was 1-0 with a 6.94 ERA and had spent time on the disabled list this season.

The Silver Sox return to Peccole Park for a seven game home stand after the all-star break. Next Friday, Saturday and Sunday will see the Long Beach Armada sail into town for Jose Canseco's only appearance in Reno this year. Friday is also Saint Mary's Water Bottle Night, where the first 1,000 fans through the gate will receive a water bottle courtesy of Saint Mary's. Saturday is Winner's Corner Ball Night as the first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive a ball featuring the heroes of the San Francisco Giants. Tickets to these and all games are available by calling the Silver Sox box office at (775) 348-7769 or by going to www.silversoxbaseball.com.
