Jose Canseco to Pitch in GBL All-Star Game
Published on July 17, 2006 under Golden Baseball League (GBL) News Release
(Pleasanton, CA. July 17, 2006) The Golden Baseball League announced today that Jose Canseco will make his GBL pitching debut on Tuesday, July 18th, during the league's All-Star Game. Canseco will pitch a minimum of one inning during the game being held at Nettleton Stadium, home of the Chico Outlaws, in Chico, California. Game time is 7:05 PM PST.
Canseco has been added as an honorary member of the South Team, led by 2005 GBL Manager of the Year Terry Kennedy. He will be joined by members of the San Diego Surf Dawgs, the Fullerton Flyers and fellow members of the Long Beach Armada. They will take on the North Team, led by Reno Silver Sox Manager Les Lancaster, with members of the Reno Silver Sox, Chico Outlaws and Yuma Scorpions.
"Canseco's pitching debut will just add another element to the fun and excitement that is the All-Star Game," said Manager Terry Kennedy. "Everyone will have the opportunity to see him showcase both his bat and his arm in one day. And even I'm anxious to see Jose's knuckleball."
After a slow start, including striking out 11 times in his first 13 at bats, Canseco's hitting has greatly improved over the last week. In the last five games with the Long Beach Armada, he has hit .333 with two home runs and seven RBIs. His homerun at Goodwin Field in Fullerton measured 475 feet, one of the longest homeruns ever hit at the field. His second homerun, hit at Blair Field in Long Beach on Sunday, was not accurately measured as it went over the left field wall, flew across the street, and landed on the fifth fairway of a nearby golf course.
Canseco has been getting his arm into pitching shape the past two weeks and will be facing a tough line-up of GBL All-Stars that include two batters with major league experience, three with Triple-A experience, and three with Double-A. Based on his performance, Long Beach Armada Manager Darrell Evans may begin to use him in regular season games.
In addition, Canseco has also been named as a participant in the pre-game GBL Home Run Derby, sponsored by Easton Bat Company. He will join ten other Golden Baseball League sluggers, as well as two local Chico participants. The Home Run Derby is scheduled to begin at 6PM on the day of the game.
Gates to Nettleton Stadium open at 5PM. Player Autograph sessions begin at 5:40 PM, and are followed by the GBL Home Run Derby and the All-Star game featuring the Golden Baseball League All-Stars.
Tickets for the GBL All-Star Game in Chico, California are still available online at www.chicooutlawsbaseball.com or by calling 530-345-3210.
