Chico Outlaws News Release
After six-and-a-half innings of scoreless baseball, the Outlaws finally broke through with three runs in the seventh inning Sunday on their way to a 4-0 shutout of the Yuma Scorpions. Grant Gregg's changeup gave Yuma hitters fits all night and the Outlaws played flawless defense behind him to up their second-half record to 2-1, 24-19 overall. Yuma falls to 1-2, 19-24.
The Outlaws will get to savor the series victory for a few days, as the Golden Baseball League's All-Star break has arrived. The All-Star game will be at Nettleton Stadium on Tuesday night.
Both pitchers threw well, but Gregg (4-2) outdueled Chris Langlois (3-5) in the later innings. Gregg struck out four and didn't walk or hit any batters in his complete game shutout (the second of his career and first nine inning shutout). Langlois struck out at least one Outlaws hitter in every inning except for the fourth to finish 6 1/3 innings with nine punch-outs. He walked four and gave up four hits.
The game remained scoreless until the seventh inning when the Outlaws broke out for three runs on two hits and three walks. Mike Mallory led off with a walk and Craig Kuzmic struck the big blow, a two-run homer that increased his season total to eight. Todd Gossage then drew a walk and Lino Garcia followed that at-bat with a single. After Langlois gave way to reliever Jared Terrebonne, Jason Matteucci knocked Gossage in with a ground-ball out.
The Outlaws added an insurance run in the eighth when Desi Wilson scorched a leadoff double to the right-centerfield gap, extending his hitting streak to five games. Wilson tagged-up on Jason Van Meetren's deep fly ball to right field and scored during the next at-bat when Scorpions catcher Jacob Guzman let a fastball glance off his glove. Wilson came home to make the score 4-0. Gregg wrapped up his gem by tossing a scoreless ninth inning as Chico took the rubber match of the three-game weekend series.
Gossage had a productive night at the plate despite rarely putting the ball in play, as Scorpions pitchers walked him three times. Wilson finished the night 2 for 4, as did Garcia.
After the three-day All-Star break, the Outlaws will be on the road against the Scorpions for a four-game series at Yuma's Desert Sun Stadium. First pitch on Thursday night in Yuma will be at 6:35. The Outlaws will return home on Monday, July 24 to face Jose Canseco and the Long Beach Armada in the opener of a seven-game homestand.
