Vancouver Canadians News Release
(Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium - Vancouver, B.C.) - A four-run, bottom of the 3rd inning powered the Vancouver Canadians to a 7-3 victory over the Tri-City Dust Devils on Monday night in front of a sellout crowd at Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium. The sellout was Vancouver's 13th of the season.
Vancouver starting pitcher LHP Tayler Saucedo (2-1) remained perfect at "The Nat", picking up his second win in as many home games. He scattered six hits over five innings of work and gave up just one run while striking out a career-high six batters.
Saucedo got plenty of help from the Canadians offense, beginning in the bottom of the 2nd inning when DH Gunnar Heidt sent a solo shot over the left field fence and into The hey y'all! Porch - his first homerun of the season.
An RBI single by Tri-City 1B Ty France would tie things up in the top of the 3rd, but Vancouver then sent 10 batters to the plate in the bottom of the frame in a four-hit, four-run onslaught. Tri-City starter LHP Jose Castillo walked CF Andrew Guillotte and 2B Ryan Metzler to lead off the inning and paid for it when 1B Justin Atkinson smacked a two-run double to center field. Three consecutive base hits by RF Sean Hurley, 3B Carl Wise and Heidt quickly made it 5-1, prompting Dust Devils manager Anthony Contreras to send in reliever LHP Jerry Keel.
The Canadians added to their lead in the 5th inning as LF Earl Burl III brought home Hurley and Wise with an RBI single.
LHP Turner Lee pitched three scoreless innings of relief before LHP Dan Young gave up a two-run homer to CF Rod Boykin as he closed out the 9th. Heidt and Atkinson finished two hits and two RBI each to lead Vancouver.
The victory pulls the Canadians to a 9-10 record in the second half and puts them in a three-way tie with Tri-City and Spokane for second place in the North Division, two games back of Everett with 19 games remaining. Game two of a three-game series between Vancouver and Tri-City goes tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. Canadians manager John Schneider will send RHP Francisco Rios (2-5, 3.80) to the mound to face Dust Devils starter RHP Joel Linares (0-0, 0.00).
