Jebavy's Four-Hit Performance Not Enough in Opener
August 18, 2015 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Salem-Keizer Volcanoes News Release
The Hops flashed the power of their bats in the third inning, using back-to-back home runs to jump out to a 5-0 lead that they wouldn't relinquish. Hillsboro went on to claim the series opener 8-3 on Monday night at Volcanoes Stadium.
Hillsboro (34-23, 12-7) extended its hold on first place to two games over Salem-Keizer (30-27, 10-9) and Eugene.
Volcanoes starter Nolan Riggs (3-1, 2.85) entered Monday's series opener having allowed just three hits and no runs over 14 innings of work vs. Hillsboro in 2015. However, the Hops reversed their fortunes off of Riggs, collecting five runs off of five hits in just four innings of work.
The Hops didn't delay their scoring efforts, plating a run in the top of the first inning. Sergio Alcantara reached on a single and came around to score on a Volcanoes error.
Hillsboro did the majority of its early damage in the third inning. After a leadoff single and walk were advanced into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt, a groundout by Alcantara put the Hops in front 2-0. With a runner on third, Josh Anderson hit his second homer of the season, pushing Hillsboro's lead to 4-0. Trevor Mitsui made it back-to-back long balls for the Hops, extending the visitor's edge to 5-0.
The Volcanoes rallied with a three-spot in the home-half of the sixth. After drawing a leadoff walk, Steven Duggar came in to score on an infield single by Jose Vizcaino Jr. C.J. Hinojosa, the newly-named Northwest League Player of the Week, pulled Salem-Keizer within two runs on a two-run homer, his fifth of the season and fourth in the last week.
With their lead significantly trimmed, Hillsboro added three runs over the seventh and eighth innings to restore a five-run lead. Alcantara singled home a run in the seventh while Nate Robertson and Steven Dezzi picked up RBIs in the eighth.
Nearly half of the Volcanoes nine hits on the night came off the bat of Ronnie Jebavy who recorded his second four-hit game as a professional. Hinojosa continued his tear of late, hitting the sixth-inning blast and recording another multi-hit effort, his 15th on the year.
Player of the Game: Ronnie Jebavy highlighted an otherwise sluggish night offensively. The Salem-Keizer center fielder went 4-for-4, his second four-hit game of his professional career.
Up Next: Salem-Keizer looks to rebound and keep pace in the Northwest League second-half race when the teams reconvene on the diamond on Tuesday night. The Volcanoes will send out right-hander Mike Connolly (4-1, 3.18) and he will be opposed by a to-be-announced pitcher for manager Shelly Duncan's Hops. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. from Volcanoes Stadium.
