Vancouver Giants News Release
The Vancouver Giants lost 6-4 to the Calgary Hitmen Wednesday night at the Pacific Coliseum. Jordan Martinook scored a pair of goals in the loss. The Giants finished 5-4-0-0 under interim head coach Glen Hanlon.
The Giants got off to a great start as Jordan Martinook scored his 23rd goal of the season 39 seconds into the game to put the home side up 1-0. Vancouver continued their early domination, converting on a power play just over 7 minutes later; Neil Manning wristed home his 5th goal of the season. However, the Hitmen would rally with a pair of goals before the period was out to even the score at 2-2 after 20 minutes.
Calgary took their first lead of the game early in the second period to go up 3-2. Giants responded courtesy of an unlikely source; Brodyn Nielsen scored his 1st career WHL goal to tie the game at 3-3 through 40 minutes.
The Hitmen came out firing in the third period of play, outshooting the Giants 11-0 in the first 10 minutes of the frame. Eventually Calgary would find a way to beat Adam Morrison to lead 4-3 with 6:33 left. The Giants though wouldn't quit as Martinook made no mistake alone in front to score his 2nd of the game and 24th goal of the season to tie the game at 4-4. However, just 1:05 later Chase Clayton scored on a breakaway to give the Hitmen a 5-4 advantage. They would add empty netter to make it a 6-4 final. The Giants finished 1-for-5 on the power play, while the Hitmen went 1-for-3.
The Giants are back in action Saturday January 7 when they play host to the Portland Winterhawks. It is the second installment of the Giants Legend Series featuring Guy Lafleur. 100 lucky fans will get to meet the Montreal Canadiens Hall of Famer and the first 5,000 fans through the door will receive a commemorative poster. The puck drops at 7:00 pm. The pregame show begins at 6:30 pm.
