Vancouver Canadians News Release

(Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium, Vancouver, BC) - On a night where the Tri-City Dust Devils made four errors, the Vancouver Canadians made each and every one count as the C's topped Tri-City 7-5 on Thursday night to continue surging in the Northwest League's West Division in front of a sold out crowd at Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium.

The Canadians opened the scoring in the bottom of the 2nd inning thanks to a two-out rally. LF Matt Newman doubled to right field and came around to score on 1B Balbino Fuenmayor's RBI single, giving Vancouver a 1-0 lead.

The Dust Devils had a two-out rally of their own in the top of the 3rd inning, scoring four runs, all with two outs. With LF Jaron Shepherd on first base, SS Tim Smalling tripled to drive him home. 1B Tyler Massey immediately cashed him in with an RBI single, stole second base, and came around to score on RF Jared Simon's base hit. Simon would eventually score on a single off the left-field wall, giving the Dust Devils a 4-1 lead.

Vancouver showed a little resiliency with a four-run outburst of their own in the bottom of the 4th inning. CF Matt Newman drove in 3B Andy Burns from second base with a single, 1B Balbino Fuenmayor added an RBI double, and C Pierce Rankin delivered a run-scoring double and later scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch making it 5-4 Vancouver.

The C's managed an insurance run in the bottom of the 7th inning when SS Shane Opitz reached second base on a two-base error. LF Jaron Shepherd dropped a routine fly ball down the left-field line allowing Opitz to eventually come around to score on a single by DH Kevin Patterson.

Tri-City scored its final run in the top of the 8th inning and had the tying run on base, but closer RHP Drew Permison picked up the final out of the inning and pitched a scoreless top of the 9th inning for his 14th save.

The third game of this five-game series with the Dust Devils resumes tomorrow afternoon as the Canadians have their final Power Smart 'Nooner of the summer, presented by BC Hydro. Gates open at noon. RHP Jesse Hernandez is expected to start for the C's.

With both Saturday and Sunday's games already Sold Out, tomorrow's Power Smart ‘Nooner is your last chance to see Canadians Baseball this 2011 regular season. Tickets are available by calling 604.872.5232, on-line at canadiansbaseball.com or by visiting the Nat Bailey Stadium Box Office at 4601 Ontario Street in Vancouver, B.C.
