Bears overcome Campos for fifth straight win
August 26, 2011 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Yakima Bears News Release
The Yakima Bears shutout the Everett Aquasox 6-0 Thursday night at Everett Memorial Stadium. The Bears, who have won a season-long five straight games, are now 15-15 in the second half of the Northwest League season, just two games back of the Tri-City Dust Devils, who lost at Vancouver Thursday.
The Aquasox got an outstanding pitching performance from starter Jose Campos, but Campos ended up the hard luck loser. Campos allowed four hits and one walk while recording 12 strikeouts. The Bears scored two unearned runs off of Campos in the third inning, which were the only runs he gave up in eight innings of work.
Matt Jensen reached on a one-out single, and then two more batters reached without an out being recorded as the Aquasox infield committed two errors. Jimmy Comerota hit a bases loaded double to plate both Jensen and Westley Moss.
Bears starting pitcher Yiomar Camacho fanned five in five shutout innings and went on to earn the victory, improving to 2-1 this season. Behind Camacho, Willy Peredes tossed three shutout innings for the Bears.
Up 2-0 after eight innings, the Bears offense started the ninth inning with four straight singles from Garrett Weber, Justin Hilt, Tyler Bream, and Kerry Jenkins. Jenkins, Steve Rodriguez, and Jensen all had an RBI during the four-run ninth.
Justin Albert allowed no runs in the ninth inning, as the Bears pitching staff tossed their third shutout of the season.
Jenkins was the only Bears batter with a multi-hit game, as he went 2-for-4, but seven of the nine hitters in the order had at least one hit. Comerota had the only extra-base hit and finished with two RBIs.
The Bears play the Aquasox in game three of the five-game series Friday at Everett Memorial Stadium. Game time is set for 7:05. Lefty pitchers Adam Kudryk of the Bears and Bennett Whitmore of the Aquasox are the expected starters.
