LOWELL, MA-The Tri-City ValleyCats earned an early lead, almost blew it and then came back to earn a 8-3 win over the Lowell Spinners at LeLachleur Park. The ValleyCats are now 6-0 in Lowell against the Spinners.
The ValleyCats scored the first run of the game in the third inning. Chris Clark started the inning with a single off of Barry Hertzler. Clark moved up to second on a past ball and went to third when Luke Barganier singled and extended his hitting streak to seven games. Lou Santangelo grounded into a double play that allowed the run to score and make it 1-0.
In the fourth inning, Ben Zobrist walked and moved up to second base when a balk was called against Hertzler. Mario Garza was hit by a pitch and Hunter Pence stepped up to the plate. He lashed an RBI single that brought Zobrist in to sore and make it 2-0.
Chris Clark smacked a solo home run in the sixth inning and the ValleyCats scored an unearned run in the seventh when Mario Garza walked, moved to second on a past ball, to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a groundout by Kevin Vital.
Raymar Diaz pitched six outstanding innings for the ValleyCats, giving up four hits and striking out eight. Paul Estrada came on to pitch the seventh and loaded the bases on a double and two walks. Estrada worked out of it, having not given up a run.
Bo Edmiston worked the eighth inning and immediately fell into trouble. He gave up two singles and a walk, as the first three Spinners hitters got on base. The bases were loaded and Matt Ciaramella stepped up to the plate. He lined a ball to leftfield. Kevin Vital caught it and threw back to second base to try to double off Drew Pinckney. The ball got past second baseman Drew Sutton. The error allowed Christian Lara to score from third base. The Spinners were on the board with a 4-1 ValleyCats lead.
Salvador Paniagua blooped a double into leftfield that allowed two runs to score. ValleyCats manager Gregg Langbehn yanked Edmiston out of the game in favor of Chad Reineke.
Reineke came on and struck out Chuck Jeroloman on three pitches. Chris Turner promptly struck out to get the ValleyCats out of trouble.
In the ninth inning, the ValleyCats put together a big inning. Jonny Ash led off with a single and was advanced to second on a sacrafice by Ben Zobrist.
