Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BURLINGTON, VT --- What the Expos gave away to the Tigers on Friday night, the Tigers gave back to the Expos on Saturday as Vermont scored seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and went on to an 8-5 victory over Oneonta in New York-Penn League action at Centennial Field.
Friday night Oneonta beat Vermont 4-2 despite getting just one hit over the first eight innings and having three of their four runs unearned due to two Expos errors. Saturday, Vermont trailed 4-1 when they used two errors and wild Tiger pitching to score seven runs on just three hits to take an 8-4 lead.
After a struckout to start the fiifth inning Saturday, Ofilio Castro reached first when leftfielder Robert Tulk dropped an easy flyball. The floodgates opened from there as the Expos got a single from Marvin Lowrance, a two-base wild pitch to score one run, a walk, hit batter, bases loaded walk and bases loaded hit batter on an 0-2 pitch to tie the game at 4-4.
Brandon Conway followed with a hard grounder to first base that got past Rafael Mendez, allowing Luke Montz and Steve Mortimer to score unearned runs for a 6-4 lead. John Poppert then got just the second hit of the inning for Vermont to score Lorvin Louisa and Conway to complete the seven-run outburst.
Oneonta, which lost 9-7 to the Expos on July 26th after taking an early 5-0 lead, scored four runs on five hits in the top of the first inning on Saturday off Vermont starter Steven Cook. But Cook (1-6) settled down to allow just three more hits, all in different innings, over the next four frames to picked up his first win of the season.
The Tigers got RBI singles in the first inning from Bo Flowers and Dusty Ryan before Mendez smashed a two-run double to right center for the 4-0 lead. The Expos got a run back in the first inning, on two singles and back-to-back walks to force home a run.
Oneonta starter Dan Konecny allowed just the one run on four hits over the first four innings. After a leadoff walk in the fourth, Konecny struckout the side and then Brad Ditter to open the fifth for his fourth straight strikeout and eighth of the game. But that's when it all fell apart for Konecny (3-6) and the Tigers as eight straight Expos reached base in the seven-run fifth.
Brent Dlugach was 2-for-5 with two runs and two doubles for Oneonta (26-27), while Brooks Colvin and Flowers were both 2-for-5 with a run scored. Lowrance and Conway both had two hits for Vermont, which saw each of the first eight batters in the order score one run.
Vermont heads to Troy, New York to take on the Stedler Division-leading Tri-City ValleyCats on Sunday and Monday evenings. After an off day on Tuesday, the Expos will host a three-game series against the ValleyCats at Centennial Field beginning on Wednesday.
