Tri-City ValleyCats News Release

TROY- The Tri-City ValleyCats beat the Oneonta Tigers 3-2 thanks to a dramatic bottom of the ninth-inning RBI double by Francisco Caraballo that brought home James Cooper to break a 2-2 tie. The ValleyCats now have a day off before the first round of the New York-Penn. League playoffs start Monday against the Brooklyn Cyclones in Brooklyn.

In the second inning, a fight broke out between the ValleyCats and Tigers. Tigers starter Andrew Kown hit Hunter Pence with a fastball in the ribs. Pence and Kown exchanged words before Pence charged the mound. The benches cleared and coaches from both teams had to break up the players. When order was restored, Pence and Tigers catcher Justin Barnes were kicked out of the game.

The ValleyCats went ahead with an early 1-0 lead when Jonny Ash hit a solo home run in the third inning off Kown. In the fourth inning with one out, James Cooper, who came into the game when Hunter Pence was ejected, singled and went to third base on a Francisco Caraballo single. Kevin Vital hit into a fielder's choice to have the second run of the game cross home plate for the ValleyCats.

Enyelbert Soto, who was called up along with Mitch Einertson and Troy Patton from Greeneville, pitched a scoreless sixth and then gave up a run in the seventh. Chad Reineke allowed the tying run to score in the eight.

In the ninth inning, Matt Righter was on the mound for his second inning of work. The Tigers right-hander struck out Mario Garza. James Cooper singled and Francisco Caraballo lashed an RBI double that brought home Cooper for the winning run.

The ValleyCats finish the regular season at 50-25 and now face Brooklyn in the first round of the New York-Penn. League playoffs on Monday. Ronnie Martinez (11-2, 1.96) starts game one for the ValleyCats. Coverage begins at 6:40 on AM 1160 WABY Mechanicville and AM 900 WUAM Saratoga Springs as well as on the Internet at sportsjuice.com.
