Cards win 6th straight to close regular season
September 4, 2004 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
New Jersey Cardinals News Release
The New Jersey Cardinals (St. Louis Cardinals) have done all they can do. Winners of their final 6 regular season games, the Cards (41-34) have put themselves in position to win the wild card. Now, they just need Mahoning Valley to cooperate. If Batavia defeats Mahoning Valley tonight, the Cards will finish 0.5 games ahead of the Scrappers and be the wild card winner of the New York Penn League.
The Cards fell behind, 2-0, early in the game when the Aberdeen Ironbirds (Baltimore Orioles) pushed across two runs in the top of the 2nd. But the Cards came roaring back in the bottom of the 5th. Tony Granadillo led off with an infield single, and Cory Taillon singled through the right side to put runners on the corners. One out later, Jose Delgado plated the first run with an RBI single to center and then Sam Herbert lofted a sac fly to right to tie the score at two.
Thats how the score remained until the bottom of the 7th. Taillon ripped another single, stole second, moved to third on a Simon Williams single and then scored the go-ahead run when Delgado reached on a fielders choice. Then, in the bottom of the 8th, the Cards put the game away when Casey Grimm drilled a huge two-run home run to make the final score 5-2.
Mike Gross (3-1) picked up the win in relief, and Russ Petrick (2-4) took the loss for the Ironbirds (35-39). Cory Doyne worked the final 1.2 innings to earn his 12th save of the season. On the day, Delgado went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI and Cory Taillon was 2-for-3 with 2 runs scored.
If the Cards are the wild card winner, they will play host to either the Auburn Doubledays or Tri-City ValleyCats in the first round of the playoffs on Monday at 7:15 pm at Skylands Park. For tickets, fans may visit the box office or call 973-579-7500.
