
Spinners defeat Expos, 6-2

BURLINGTON, VT --- The Lowell Spinners scored three runs in the top of the first inning and went on to a 6-2 victory over the Vermont Expos in the 2004 New York-Penn League season finale for both teams Saturday night at Centennial Field.
Heriberto Guzman had a two-run single and Andrew Pinckney an RBI single in the Spinners three-run first inning off Expos starter Nehomar Ochoa. Lowell added another run in the third on an RBI single from Matt Ciaramella, then took a 6-0 lead in the sixth inning with a two-run inning that included an RBI triple from Dee Williams off reliever Francisco Sandoval.
The Expos got on the board in the seventh on an RBI forceout from Marvin Lowrance to score Jose Contreras, who had led off the inning with a double. Vermont got its final run of the season in the bottom of the ninth on a solo home run from Ian Desmond. Desmond's home run was the 48th overall for Vermont, a franchise-record, and the Expos 24th home run at Centennial Field this season.
Pinckney and Carlos De La Cruz both had two hits for Lowell, while Luke Montz was 2-for-3 with two doubles for Vermont. Brad Ditter had a double in his third and final at bat of the night for the Expos to raise his average back over .300 and finish at .302 for the season.
Lowell starter Tommy Hottovy allowed three hits over three shutout innings, while reliever Dave Sanders (2-2) gave up two hits in two innings to pick up the victory. Ochoa (0-3) allowed four runs on seven hits over four innings for the loss.
The Spinners won the final two games of the four-game series to end the season 32-44, while Vermont ends the 2004 season 34-38, winning 15 more games than they did during the 2003 season with they were 19-56.
