SALISBURY, MD - Trailing 7-1 going into the ninth inning, the Delmarva Shorebirds rallied to bring the tying run to the plate but fell just short in a 7-5 loss to the Salem Red Sox on Wednesday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

The Shorebirds (2-9, 23-53) nearly pulled off their largest comeback of the season only to see the Red Sox (6-5, 41-36) hold on thanks to multiple insurance runs plated late.

Salem started the scoring in the second when Jonathan Diaz roped a two-run double down the rightfield line, putting Salem ahead 2-0.

Marcelo Mayer extended the Red Sox lead in the third with an RBI double of his own down the leftfield line.

The Shorebirds got on the board in the bottom of the third when Anthony Servideo singled home a run with the bases loaded, but let the opportunity go to waste as they stranded the bases loaded to end the frame.

Mayer walked to open the sixth and then moved to third on a Blaze Jordan double. Eduardo Lopez then scored Mayer with a groundball to second, making it 4-1 Salem.

The Red Sox tacked on more insurance runs in the seventh and eighth with Brainer Bonaci scoring a run in the seventh with a sacrifice fly while Diaz picked up his third RBI of the game in the eighth with a base hit before Bryan Gonzalez scored on a passed ball to make it 7-1.

The Shorebirds started their charge back with a Stiven Acevedo walk to lead off the ninth. After a strikeout, Creed Willems and Luis Valdez each singled to load the bases. Heston Kjerstad then ripped a three-run double down the rightfield line to bring the 'Birds to within 7-4. After another strikeout, Isaac De León doubled to deep right-center, scoring Kjerstad, making it 7-5. That was as close as Delmarva got however, as Salem escaped, stranding the tying run at the plate with a strikeout to close the game.

Blake Loubier (1-1) secured the win in relief for Salem, tossing two scoreless innings while allowing just two hits and striking out two.

Conor Grady (3-6) pitched well but was saddled with the loss for the Shorebirds after allowing three runs over five innings on three hits and two walks, tying a career high with seven punchouts.

Luis Guerrero struck out the final batter of the game for Salem (the only hitter he faced) to pick up his third save of the season..

The Shorebirds continue their six-game series with the Salem Red Sox on Thursday, July 7 at Perdue Stadium. Deivy Cruz (0-0, 1.13) is slated to start for the Shorebirds while Salem tabs Wikelman Gonzalez (3-2, 4.50). First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. with pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on theshorebirds.com with Sam Jellinek on the call.
