Fayetteville Woodpeckers News Release
Fayetteville, NC - The Fayetteville Woodpeckers (34-42, 3-8) notched just three hits but still pieced together a 3-2 win over the Down East Wood Ducks (39-38, 6-5) thanks to some timely hitting and dominant pitching on Wednesday night at Segra Stadium. The win ended a five-game losing streak and evened the series with Down East going into Thursday.
Miguel Palma came up with the big game-winning swing in the bottom of the eighth inning with Logan Cerny standing on second base and Joey Loperfido aboard first. Facing a two-out spot, Palma rolled an RBI single off Jose Corniell (L, 1-3) into center field that scored Cerny for the 3-2 lead.
The go-ahead base hit handed Christian Mejias (W, 4-1) his first lead of the night after entering the game from the bullpen in the fifth inning. Mejias dominated on the mound for five scoreless frames, allowing just one hit, striking out five, and closing down the game in the ninth to earn the winning decision.
The Woodpeckers had to climb back into the game early after falling behind 2-0. Bryant Salgado pitched four innings in his start, allowing a home run to Alejandro Osuna on the first at bat of the game and an RBI single to Marcus Smith later in the third. Salgado closed his day with a scoreless fourth inning and struck out a total of three Down East hitters in the no-decision.
Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the third, Logan Cerny tapped a slow-rolling infield single off Emiliano Teodo that extended the inning with two outs. Joey Loperfido followed up with the other timely hit of the night, a line drive triple that found the wall in right center field wall. Cerny scored on the play and the relay throw from right field careened into the third base dugout, granting Loperfido home plate and tying the game 2-2.
The contest was dominated by pitching the rest of the way as things remained knotted until Palma's clutch swing in the eighth.
The series will continue on Thursday night at Segra Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 pm. Fayetteville is projected to start RHP Miguel Ullola (0-0, 3.19 ERA) and Down East will counter with RHP Ryan Garcia on the mound (0-0, 2.03 ERA).
