Columbia Fireflies News Release

FIREFLIES STAY HOT WITH WALK-OFF WINNER: The Fireflies outlasted the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, scoring five of the last six runs in the final four innings to win 9-8 at Segra Park Monday night. Omar Hernandez was the hero. After a bunt single from Jean Ramirez to advance the placed runner, Omar Florentino, to third base, the backstop poked a single through the middle to crown the Fireflies (9-1) walk-off winners. It was Hernandez's second walk-off single of the season, he also helped beat the Down East Wood Ducks April 24 with a single in the 11th. The walk-off was possible because Luis Barroso (W, 3-3) stranded the inherited runner at third after allowing the lead-off runner to reach. The Pelicans (5-5) scored one run in the top of the ninth, but Guillermo Quintana extended his 2022 Fireflies-best hitting streak to eight games with a single that plated Carter Jensen and Enrique Valdez to tie the game in the ninth with two outs. The Pelicans scored a handful of runs off four hits in the seventh inning to give them a 7-4 lead. They worked off both Tim Holdgrafer and Ben Wereski in the inning as 11 Myrtle Beach hitters came to the dish.

NO QUIT IN QUINTANA: Columbia's first baseman has been on an absolute tear, as he's hit in a 2022 Fireflies-best eight-consecutive games. During his streak, Guillermo Quintana is 12-31 over the stretch (.387) and has driven in seven RBI. This is the fourth time that a Fireflies player has had a hitting streak of six or more games this season. Quintana has accomplished the feat twice and River Town has also done it two times.

FRESH PAIR OF JEAN: Columbia's outfielder hasn't been with the Fireflies long. He has played 14 games in 2022 in the neon and navy. In that time though, he has amassed a .283 batting average and has slotted into the lead-off role for Columbia. In the second-half of that time, he has been unbeatable. He is currently riding the Fireflies sixth hitting streak of six games or more this season, going 10-28 (.357) since game two of June 29's doubleheader with the Augusta GreenJackets. He has added one homer and three RBI on the stretch.

WE'RE GOING STREAKING: The Fireflies are currently on their longest winning streak while they've been affiliated with the Kansas City Royals. The franchise's longest winning streak was a nine-game stretch June 4-12, 2017. During the stretch, they won their last game of a series vs Hagerstown before sweeping Lexington in a three-game set and then taking five-consecutive against the Charleston RiverDogs.

NEW YEAR, NEW ME: The second half of the season started last Thursday, which reset each team's record to 0-0. The Fireflies finished the first half (66 games) 28 games back of Myrtle Beach, who had the best record in Minor League Baseball. After starting the second-half 9-1, the Fireflies are in first place and possess a magic number of 53 to clinch the first playoff berth in franchise history.

PANZINI POPS: When Shane Panzini starts a game, the Fireflies have had a lot of success. The Fireflies have their best record when the New Jersey native starts a game this season, a 5-2 record.

THIS WEEK'S JERSEY AUCTION: The Fireflies will be wearing special military jerseys both tonight and Thursday night for Military Appreciation night. The proceeds from the jerseys will go to the non-profit Folds of Honor that helps provide for families of fallen or disabled vets.
