July 6, 2022 - Carolina League (CarL)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

Following a rare Tuesday off day, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans came together for 11 hits and 11 runs in their 11-3 victory over the Columbia Fireflies on Wednesday night. The win evened the series at one and moved Myrtle Beach up to 53-24 on the season, with a 6-5 second-half record. Columbia dropped just their second game in their last 11 and dropped to 27-50 on the year.

After being named the Cubs Minor League Player of the Month for June earlier in the day, Ezequiel Pagan (3-4, HR, 4 RBI, 2 R, BB) hit a solo home run and brought in three more off a pair of singles. Alejandro Rivero (1-4, 2 RBI) and Kevin Alcantara (1-3, 2 RBI, R) both has multi-RBI nights. Myrtle Beach cashed in with runners in scoring position, going 7-for-15 in the win.

Tyler Schlaffer (4-3) went six innings for the second-straight start on the way to his fourth win of the season. Schlaffer gave up three earned runs off six hits and a pair of walks with four strikeouts in his performance. Angel Gonzalez and Gregori Montano closed it out the rest of the way with three shutout frames.

The Fireflies were led by River Town (1-4, HR, 2 RBI) with a two-run homer to put them in the lead in the third inning. Columbia collected eight hits from eight different hitters and went 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position, stranding seven.

After starter Ben Hernandez tossed the first five innings with two earned runs, Delvin Capellan allowed seven earned runs in the top of the sixth while recording just one out to take the loss. Capellan surrendered six hits and two walks in his disastrous outing. Matt Stil allowed two more unearned runs in his 2 1/3 innings following Capellan.

Columbia started scoring early with a run in the opening frame. With runners on the corners and one out, Carter Jensen lifted a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Daniel Vazquez for the game's first run.

Pagan responded for the Pelicans in their half of the second. He drove a 1-2 pitch over the left-field wall for his seventh home run of the season as the game tied up 1-1.

The Fireflies would fire back in the bottom of the third. With a runner on third and two outs, Town hit his 10th home run of the season to right field on a 2-2 pitch to put the home team back in the lead 3-1.

The train of 10 unanswered runs started with one coming in the fifth. After reaching on a walk and stealing second, Ethan Hearn would score on a one-out single by Mora to right field to bring the Birds within one.

Seven runs in the top of the sixth would decide the game as the Pelicans took a commanding lead. The inning started with a triple from James Triantos and RBI single by Alcantara to tie the game 3-3. Alcantara would go to second on a fielding error and scored on Pagan's single up the middle as the Pelicans took a 4-3 lead. After a walk from Felix Stevens, Jacob Wetzel flew a double to right field to score Pagan and move runners to second and third with nobody out. Hearn walked to load the bases and Rivero grounded a single up the middle to score two more for a 7-3 Myrtle Beach lead. After the first out was made on a fielder's choice by Mora, Kevin Made singled to left to score Hearn as Capellan came out of the game. Triantos loaded the bases on a walk, and the final run of the inning came on Alcantara's sacrifice fly to center field to plate Mora as the Pelicans left the top of the sixth with a 9-3 advantage.

Two more runs came in the top of the eighth on a two-out, two-run single by Pagan to left field for his third and fourth RBI of the night.

Montano walked the first two in the Fireflies' half of the ninth but struck out the next three to close out the game.

Game three of the series will be played on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m.
