Valera's Tear Continues with Game-One Walk-Off; Game Two Postponed

(Eastlake, OH) - The Lake County Captains (46-41) were once again powered by two George Valera home runs, including a walk-off blast in game one of a scheduled doubleheader. Game two was postponed due to rain and will be made up on Saturday.

With two outs in the top of the first inning Andrew Navigato got the scoring started with a solo home run to put West Michigan ahead 1-0.

The Whitecaps added another tally in the second to go up 2-0. Gage Workman doubled to open the inning. After a Rey Rivera lineout Ulrich Bojarski singled to bring in Workman.

Lake County got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning. Raynel Delgado walked, and advanced to second with one out on a Gianpaul Gonzalez single. With two out Quentin Holmes got the job done when he smoked a single to left field that brought in Delgado to make the score 2-1, Whitecaps.

West Michigan added a singular run for the third straight inning. Another leadoff double began the inning for the Whitecaps, this time with Jose King splitting the gap for extra bases. With two out Daniel Cabrera rolled a single directly back up the middle to drive in King and extend the Whitecaps lead to 3-1.

The Captains went to the bullpen in the top of the fifth inning, calling Nick Gallagher into the game. With one out King and Parker Meadows combined for back to back singles to put runners on the corners. Next up was Navigato and he hit a shallow pop up to right field that King was able to tag up and score on from third base to push the advantage to 4-1.

Lake County's top of the order tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Julian Escobedo ripped a double to right center to start the rally. He was followed by Valera who connected on his first home run of the day to bring the Captains within one. On the next pitch José Tena pulled a home run to right field to go back to back with Valera for the second time in two days to even the score 4-4.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Valera led off for the Captains and he connected on his second home run of the game to right field for a walk-off home run to give the Captains a 5-4 win.

Kevin Kelly (2-4) earned the win with a scoreless top of the seventh inning. He walked two and struck out one in his one inning of work.

Zach Hess (0-5) took the loss in relief for West MIchigan. Valera was the only batter he faced in the seventh inning.

The Captains and the Whitecaps will play a doubleheader on Saturday. Game one is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. from Classic Park. Tickets for Friday's game can be exchanged for tickets to any regular season 2021 Captains home game, subject to availability. Friday's tickets are valid for both games on Saturday.
