Brockton Rox News Release

Worcester, Mass. - Rox CF Chris Valencia smacked his second homer of the year and went 4-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored as Brockton topped the Worcester Tornadoes, 10-3, on Tuesday night at Hanover Insurance Park. Brockton has won five in a row, and are ten games above .500 for the first time this season.

For the second straight game in the series, the Rox (12-9 second half, 39-29 overall) plated first-inning runs, this time scoring four on five hits. After Valencia doubled to begin the game, DH Scott Wearne brought him home with a single and Brockton led just three pitches into the ballgame.

Two batters later, 1B Melvin Falu scored Wearne with a single and 3B Phillip Cuadrado finished off the frame with a two-run single.

Brockton doubled its lead in the second inning, scoring four runs on five hits again as Valencia doubled in SS Dominic Ramos, who began the inning with a double of his own. Falu drove in another run with a single, and Cuadrado cashed in with his second two-run single to give the Rox the 8-0 advantage.

The Tornadoes (11-11, 30-39) scored a run off of Brockton starting RHP Wayne Lundgren in the second with C Alex Trezza's seventh homer of the year, a solo shot, to make it 8-1. Lundgren went six full innings for the Rox, eventually allowing just two runs on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

The Rox added their final two runs in the fifth inning, on Valencia's lead-off home run, his third professional longball, and on a two-out RBI single by RF Keith Brachold.

Lundgren (7-4) earned the victory for the Rox, while LHP Brad Hertzlerthrew two innings of relief, giving up one run on two hits. RHP Colin Lynch closed it out with a perfect ninth inning.

Worcester starting RHP Matt Giusti (2-7) took the loss after surrendering ten runs on a league-record 16 hits in 4.2 innings. Giusti did strike out six batters and Worcester pitching struck out 14 total.

Brockton as a team had six doubles which is a season high. After last night's 21 hits, the Rox came in with 18 base knocks tonight. The Rox could have had more as they left 14 runners on base over the course of the game.

Wearne (2-for-5), 2B Shawn Williams (3-for-5), Falu (2-for-6), Cuadrado (3-for-4) and Ramos (2-for-5) all had multi-hit affairs for Brockton. Cuadrado drove in a team-high four runs, while Valencia and Falu each had two RBI. Cuadrado has driven in eight runs in the first two games of the series, while Williams is 7-for-12 to begin the three-game set.

The finale of the series is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday night at Hanover Insurance Park. RHP Mike Smith (9-3), the league's leader in ERA at 2.99, tries to become the first pitcher to ten wins on the season. Worcester sends out RHP Justin Knoff (2-1).
