New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, NJ - The New Jersey Jackals scored a season-high seven runs in the bottom of the seventh as they defeated the Quebec Capitales for the second straight night, 9-6, on Tuesday evening at Yogi Berra Stadium.

After starters Chris Vasami and Karl Gelinas battled through four scoreless innings, Quebec plated five runs in the top of the fifth against Vasami to open up a 5-0 lead. With the bases loaded, first baseman Marc Mimeault doubled to make it 2-0 before shortstop Ivan Naccarata's groundout extended Quebec's lead to 3-0. The next batter, second baseman Josh Colafemina, lined a ball off the right field foul line into the Capitales bullpen and motored all the way around for a two-run, inside-the-park home run as Quebec took a 5-0 lead.

The Jackals plated a pair of unearned runs in the sixth against reliever Andy Schon on a Mike DeJesus RBI single and a wild pitch to cut their deficit to 5-2. But in the top of the seventh, Quebec tallied three consecutive hits off reliever Luis Fernandez included an RBI base knock from Sebastian Boucher to make it 6-2.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Jackals erupted for seven runs against a trio of Quebec relievers to take the lead for the first time. New Jersey sent 11 batters to the plate with center fielder Adam Godwin leading off with a bunt single and adding an RBI base hit later in the frame. The six-hit outburst also included doubles by DeJesus and left fielder Kevin Clark plus RBI singles by third baseman Abraham Nunez and designated hitter Jacob Butler. Just there of the seven runs were earned because first baseman Jabe Bergeron reached base on a no-out error by Capitales shortstop Ivan Naccarata.

Fernandez (2-0) picked up the win out of the bullpen with Edgar Estanga, Edward Rodriguez, and Romas Hicks each tossing scoreless relief. Hicks pitched the ninth and notched his league-leading 16th save of the season. Reliever James Kukucka (2-2) absorbed the loss for Quebec.

In his third professional start, Vasami allowed five runs on seven hits in 6.1 innings while notching six strikeouts and walking just one batter. Gelinas left after five scoreless frames. Neither starter factored in the decision.

Offensively, DeJesus and Godwin each went 3-for-4 while DeJesus and Clark each knocked in two runs.

The Jackals (11-11 second half, 30-38 overall) and Capitales (12-9, 42-26) conclude their three-game series on Wednesday morning at 11:05 p.m. when New Jersey sends southpaw Ryan Lobban to the mound against Quebec right-hander Michel Simard.
