Evansville Thunderbolts News Release
EVANSVILLE, IN - The Evansville Thunderbolts have teamed up with the University of Southern Indiana to bring sports testing and nutrition to professional ice hockey players. Beginning Monday, Oct. 17, USI professors and students will be working side-by-side with professional ice hockey players to measure electrolyte replacement beverages, heart rates and body composition.
Beth A. Young, instructor of nutrition, and her students are conducting research with the Thunderbolts to evaluate professional ice hockey players' sweat rates and composition in order to determine the most effective electrolyte replacement beverage. This research is being conducted alongside testing by Dr. Jason Langley and his students using a BodPod, a device that players sit in that will accurately measure body composition.
"Hockey players can lose between two and four liters of sweat during an on-ice practice or game," said Young. "If an athlete fails to properly replace the fluids lost in sweat their athletic performance can be comprised, particularly late in the game."
Body composition will take place from 8 to 9 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 17 at USI's Human Performance lab, with hydration and sweat composition following at 9:30 a.m. at Swonder Ice Arena.
"The Thunderbolts are receiving a unique opportunity by collaborating with the University of Southern Indiana," said Young. "The type of hydration testing that the team will undergo is not typically seen at this level of competition. USI students will have the opportunity to have hands-on learning experiences by being involved with conducting the various hydration tests on the athletes."
