Mayhem Earn 5-4 Win in Exhibition Game

MACON, GA- In their pre-season exhibition game tonight, the Macon Mayhem defeated the Columbus Cottonmouths by a score of 5-4. The offensive firepower was impressive from many different players tonight, as five different players scored for the Mayhem.
Mark Rivera started the scoring on the power play when he attempted to center a pass to Stephen Pierog, but the puck deflected off a Cottonmouths defender and into the net. The Mayhem were able to extend their lead in the first when Collin MacDonald scored on a breakaway, shooting the puck over the left pad of Cottonmouths' goaltender Alex Larson. Daniel Gentzler extended the Macon lead even further when he beat Larson in a race to the puck in the slot and buried it in the wide open net. Columbus would answer after that goal, as Jonathan Turk scored on a tip in front of Mayhem goaltender Jordan Ruby.
In the second period, Stathis Soumelidis scored off of a Columbus turnover by blasting a shot over the left shoulder of Larson to extend the lead to 4-1. Just two minutes later, Matt Johnson scored from the top of the circle on the power play off of a pass from Daniel Echeverri. Keegan Bruce answered for Columbus with six minutes left in the period to bring the score to 5-2 in favor of the Mayhem. The second period featured two fights involving Macon's Vadim Guskov and Daniel Sobotka.
Columbus did their best to try and come back in the third period, as they scored two goals off the sticks of Easton Oliver and Derek Gingera. Spencer Finney, the Mayhem goaltender in the second half of the game, turned away several great chances at the end of the game to preserve the 5-4 lead.
Five different Mayhem players scored goals, while Daniel Echeverri, Ryan Michel, Daniel Swink, and Stephen Pierog added assists. Starting goaltender Jordan Ruby made eight saves on nine shots, while Spencer Finney made 17 saves on 20 shots in his time.
