Mississippi RiverKings News Release
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - It was a strong start for the Mississippi RiverKings pre-season as they won the first of their two games to be played this weekend 3-2 against the Huntsville Havoc on Saturday night at PharmacyFirst Ice. The start of the game was strong for the RiverKings as they netted all 3 of their goals in the first two frames, but they would not score another goal the rest of the night and allow for the Havoc to bring it back within one in the third period.
The RiverKings would strike first with 10:59 left in the first on a trickling puck that would get in off the stick of Dillan Fox with assists coming from Chris Luker and Mark Petaccio. That wouldn't be the only goal from the RiverKings in the first as Ryan Marcuz scored the second on an unassisted shot to give the RiverKings a comfortable two goal lead going in to the second period. The period would see a total of 6 penalties between the two teams and the RiverKings would outshoot the Havoc 14 to 10.
The second period wouldn't see a goal until the later half when Todd Hosmer would add to the RiverKings lead and make it 3-0, after Nolan Kaiser and Jeff Jones of the Havoc collided to give him a free lane for the goal. A period that was in part slowed up due to 7 penalties throughout and only saw 16 shots from both sides, 9 for the Havoc and only 7 for the RiverKings.
A push from the Havoc would come in the third as they tried to close the gap but they would fall short as they only scored two in the period. The first coming from Robbie Simpson's stick as he was fed from Tyler French and Jeff Jones and the second a shot from Bryan Sullivan for French's second assist of the night. The Havoc would continue to apply pressure at the end but could not get the equalizer on RiverKings netminder Alex Caffi who stood strong on his 24-save night.
The RiverKings now come back home for a 3:00 p.m. Sunday matinée at the Landers Center against the Knoxville IceBears to finish off their exhibition schedule in preparation for the regular season.
The RiverKings return to the Landers Center on Friday, October 21 to take on the Evansville Thunderbolts at 7:30 p.m. Groups of 10 or more purchasing Opening Night tickets before October 14 will receive free tickets to a future game.
